Life moves pretty fast. You don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.
Ferris Bueller had the right idea. On Tuesday, Lululemon and Flywheel hosted the first annual Ditch Day, on the agenda? Escaping the city for Sag Harbor, a kick-ass Flywheel spinning class followed by a vinyasa yoga class at their studio out there before being spirited away to the Flywheel house for food, drinks and lounging by the pool all afternoon. I am not sure how they managed to plan that whole amazing day for a measly $40 but the minute I read about it I knew I had to go. This summer has been a broke-fest for me and I haven’t managed to do anything that even remotely felt like real life escapism. I knew I even I could scrape together $40 for a day of summer fun.
So yesterday at 7:30am, I met up in front of Flywheel to hop on a Sag Harbor bound bus with about 35 other people. As we filed onto the bus we were each given a breakfast bag from Pump. Mine had a mighty good little fresh pressed "immunity" juice, a mystery breakfast bar (my allergy’s made eating it seem like a bad plan) and a coupon for a free “plate or wrap or salad” - I am admittedly a little overly excited about the coupon. The trip was about 2 1/2 hours or so but since it was on the way TO the adventure it seemed to go by much faster then I expected. I was also one of the few to be solo but the nice part about that is that I got a seat all to myself. Yay for solo adventure perks! As we pulled up to the studio in Sag Harbor one seat back I hear very distinctly, “I know Fat Bottom Slim is here.” I turned around, waved and finally met Sandella who had also decided Ditch Day was too good to miss.
Flywheel’s Studio in Sag Harbor was inside of a gym. It was different then I had pictured in my head but still had all of the things that make it so amazing - great people, free spin shoes, free bottles of water, nice towels and awesome bikes with their special torque boards that don’t let you cheat. Of course our class was lead by the wonderful Kate Hickl, who as I have said before is one of my all time favorite teacher of anything - not just spinning. She was really one of the main reasons I signed up. Kate is just flat out inspiring while she leads you though a killer spin class. I always leave drenched in sweat, relaxed, and joyful - I mean really does it get better then that?
After a quick wardrobe change for the sweatiest of us, we took a fantastic vinyasa class from Lisa Zalog. I really was sort of expecting a slow restorative class, although had I actually looked up Lisa before Ditch Day I would have probably guess that wasn’t what we were going to get. I think it was slow for her but it was distinctly a flow class. I loved it but about midway through the hour long class I was exhausted. I was so grateful by the time we got to pigeon I could have cried and honestly almost fell asleep in Savasana.
One more wardrobe change and we where off to our pool party. Flywheel opened their summer home to us and just did such an incredible job of making everyone feel at home. I felt like one of those rare house parties ever where no one was too cool to not realize how lucky we all were to be there. There was an amazing spread of food and drinks and we all loaded our plates up and headed down to the pool where we spent the rest of the afternoon. The Lululemon peeps were amazing, fun and social and so good at getting all the different groups to mix up. I talked to so many great people and had such a carefree day that when it was finally time to pack up I couldn’t believe how much time had passed.
It really was the perfect day. The bus ride back seemed to last forever but that was probably only because I wished the day had...
