my obligatory summit photo!
inventory of wounded body parts, from most to least uncomfortable:
-- Nose. My septum and the area around my nostrils is SO UNBELIEVABLY CHAPPED from repeat farmers blows and from wiping it on various sleeves, scarves, etc. (Sorry, but it's true). It might also be a little sunburned -- the snow reflects up and your septum can get it the worst -- but I can't tell because it's developed a second protective layer of skin that's totally horrible and uncomfortable. I look like I've been crying for days. I've walked around the office all day with my nose slathered in Neosporin.
-- Achilles tendons. Both of them are still swollen, my left one the most, from climbing the last 2,000 or so feet to the false summit, a very steep and very long ascent. I didn't realize how well-dug the boot tracks were in another part of the trail and was instead trying to kick tracks myself, putting an insane amount of stress on both achilles tendons. The left one got it worst. They each hurt to the touch, although they're fine to walk on.
-- Butt. Mountain climbing: like walking up stairs for 12 hours. So, you know.
Otherwise, everything is a little creaky but otherwise OK. Boyfriend and I had a good, long, fulfilling sleep Saturday night (we were both so tired we could hardly talk to each other) and although I awoke with a god-awful horrific tension headache Sunday morning, a little Excedrin and a generous head rub made it better. Lessons to be learned from this: drink more water while climbing (I tried to drink from my Camelbak nearly the entire time) and have a really nice boyfriend.
It's still TBD if more mountain climbing is in my future. It sure was a thrill. Plus, bf and I have matching helmets! :-D
