summiting
I climbed Mount Adams yesterday: 12,281 feet. My first mountain! It took us 12 1/2 hours to get up and back; thankfully we had a true "alpine start" and left camp at 3 AM. It was significantly harder, physically, than I ever would have expected; I understand now why people say that climbing Mt. Hood (shorter than Adams by ~1000 feet) is the same as running a marathon. Adams is a non-technical climb (at least from the south side), so we only needed crampons and ice axes. I got to glissade for the first time (against the advice of our most experienced mountaineer, who suggested it was better to wait and take a class) and it was four or five minutes of giddy, kid-like laughing all the way down the slope it had taken probably two hours to climb.
I have sweet photos at the summit, to be posted once I have my camera back in hand. Totally awesome, guys. And I didn't even mind being in 5 layers, in the snow, in July.
