Workout

long run, the 3rd.

This week's long run was 14 miles. Can I get a "you're a bad-ass"!? I actually did the run with the Jeff Galloway group. The Galloway approach to marathoning is not typical and may not appeal to some. Basically, it's a run/walk approach. One of Trainer Mike's clients invited me along on the group run when I indicated interest in learning more about the method. In our group, we alternated 3 minutes of running with 1 minute of walking. Another thing to mention is that training runs are supposed to be 2 minutes per mile SLOWER than the expected race pace.

The run was long. I mean a little over 3 hours long. But, I was chatting it up with people and it was a relaxed easy way to get trough a run that would normally wreck my body and probably leave me mind-numbingly bored. Yes, I was tired after the run and I couldn't seem to eat enough to recover (I burned over 1700 calories!!!)...but at no point did my muscles hurt - not during or after the run. After my 1/2 marathon, I was so wrecked I couldn't walk down stairs! Today, I'm helping my parents move without any discomfort at all!

The snob in me wants to say I should actually RUN my marathon, but the other side is telling me to make this whole experience as pleasant as possible. It's a four month journey, with an amazing goal to complete 26.2 miles of historic trail, and I want to enjoy it. I'm not a competitive runner - I'm doing this for the experience. So, maybe I should just use this method. After all, i'm a marathoner regardless of if I finish the race in 4 hours or 5. And, apparently, the walk/run method, in the end, is much more likely to improve your speed since your pace isn't slowed down by a progressively deteriorating body. In fact, most people Are apparently able to run personal best times using this method. Food for thought...

190 minutes of running
