Workout
True Fitness Is Not Activity-Specific
Today I had a swimming lesson, did a bunch of sets of push-ups (up to 6 at a time, full-body, with the Perfect Push-Ups), and ran five miles in the coolest weather we've had in weeks and weeks.
Here's the really cool thing: I haven't run five miles in ages. And the only running I've done in the last month has been on the treadmill. But I've been doing a lot of plyometrics/30-day shred/swimming, and when I do run on the treadmill, it's speedwork. So I was nervous that this long(-ish) run would be painful.
TO THE CONTRARY. I found I was in better shape than the last time I did the same run. I bounded up the hills. Glided along. My time was a personal best, even stopping at several traffic lights and one water fountain.
This Crossfit/plyometrics/general idea of working more intensely for shorter periods of time works, you guys. I felt it. I am excited.

i totally works!!! you build up a strong foundation and can pretty much do anything after that...it's one of those primal lifestyle things i'm trying to work into my life more, but it's kinda hard to do that (mentally) while training for a marathon (which is totally not a primal-friendly activity). everything you hear about marathon training is about building distance and running time...i'm trying to be more relaxed about it and make sure that i'm doing my weights, plyo and intervals.

Speedwork works miracles! I have always been the slowwwest runner... eight weeks of speedwork and I'm already running at a respectable pace! Not to mention the slimming and trimming effects.
