108 Sun Salutations for the Summer Solstice

Yama Yoga Studio hosted an event for the summer solstice yesterday: 108 Sun Salutations.

Oh did I mention that it was 104°F and they turned off the A/C? So I guess that counts as a hot yoga class. We sis ten sets on ten sun salutations, holding downward dog for five breaths only on every tenth salutation, and rounding off the last eight by holding every downward dog for five breaths.

It was intense. Twice I transitioned from forward bend to seated, had some water and transitioned back to cobra on the next salutation (thus half completing two salutations) but I made up for these at home later on.Oh yeah, when it was over we did some "relaxing" hip opening poses before a long savasana.

I sweated like crazy. It was crazy. I am a huge sweater, but I have never sweated like this before. Bits of me swated that I didn't realize had sweat glands.

Hello Summer. I'm glad you're here because it's too hot in Qatar but I have a Canadian summer ahead of me and I want it to be warm.

*In ancient Indian astronomy 108 is taken to be the distance between the earth and the sun in sun-diameter units, and the distance between the earth and the moon in moon-diameter units. The voyage of the earth around the sun is also said to take 108 units of 3 1/3 days. (Every 3 1/3 days has a deity assigned to it.) -http://www.facebook.com/?sk=messages&tid=1465324228675#!/event.php?eid=100984636619887

I love this! I've been baffled by this elusive number "108." I'd heard it was the number of Hindu gods; a quick Gooogle search reveals so much more! I sense no affinity whatsoever for this number, except maybe it's a good number to qualify as torture when it comes to reps!
