Workout

post in which there is whining and whinging and a minute bit of self examination

first up, gym:  treadmill, weights.  not exactly exciting, or more to the point, easy, but put in the work, and felt better afterwards.

second:  mlogging.  not a fan.  i'd been looking forward to this going the way of the dodo at the end of may 15.  (what?  you mean the free, internet-based workoutnetworkingsystem, and did i mention, highly informative and also free and 'also who's insisting you play anyway?' isn't meeting all your needs?  don't you have a therapist for that?)  but its still slamming along, and every time i log onto this site, i feel guilty (early catholicism, rearing its little crowned stigmatic head) that i'm not putting in more minutes. i feel guilty that i'm not doing those 6 hour hikes i did on the weekends when i lived in cali for grad school.  i feel strange that i just can't budget, time-wise, for a yoga class and a boot camp class in the same day as a longish walk. (though, admittedly, that was always a bit of a superegoic con job to accomplish, with semi-elaborate leveraging procedures.) i've been stretching my workouts, to pad the minutes, and its just making me annoyed, especially since the 25 minute workout from yesterday left me more sore and exhausted than any of my recent 2 hour workouts, simply because it was short enough that i kept up a brutal pace, knowing it would be over soon, rather than reserving reservoirs to continue.

bottom line:  i don't want longer workouts.  walking around the city, yes, but in the kind of shoes that preclude warp speed, and with shopping and museums and drinks with lavender and tequila and long pauses in the park. i want high speed, efficient workouts that leave me lying on the ground vaguely queasy, and longer workouts, but not usually 2 hours of longer. and i don't want to count the minutes, anymore than i want to count the calories.

Science is also on your side:

"Interestingly, they did not find that exercise beyond a certain point conferred significant additional health benefits."

– "How Little Exercise Can You Get Away With?"

and my personal favorite:

"Can You Get Fit in Six Minutes a Week"

I've never been a fan of having to keep track of minutes! But I'm finding that it's just not a big deal if I don't make it a big deal - I'm just going on about my life and noting how much time I put into exercise (which includes my commutes, which add up), so it's turned from being something that turns me off into something kind of interesting, since I've never really thought about exactly how much time I put into this.

Thanks for this post!
