The Medium Lane: Not Too Fast, Not Too Slow

After swimming in the slow lane for several months, I promoted myself to the medium lane last night, and it wasn't as intimidating as I thought it would be. In fact, I was evenly matched with several of the swimmers in the lane, a little faster than a few and a little slower than a few -- so I was medium in the medium lane.

I bumped myself up a lane after becoming increasingly frustrated with the slow lane (water runners belong in the leisure lane -- not the slow lane!). Plus the slow lane was incredibly crowded -- at one point there were EIGHT people in the lane.

The medium lane also provided good motivation to keep going and not dwadle at the turn around points because I wanted to stay evenly spaced so I wouldn't slow someone else behind me down.

I focused on stretching really long, keeping my elbows up and pulling each stroke with my back muscles. I also tried to increase the number of strokes with each breath -- that was a bit more inconsistent. The problem is I am really bad at breathing on my left side, so sometimes by the time I get to a stroke on my right side I am bursting for air -- not good. I suppose I should practice breathing on my left more. Maybe later this week.

That's funny--I am not as good at breathing on my left, either.  The other day I went to the pool (first time in ages) and held a kickboard in my hands out in front of me, face in the water, and just kicked and practiced breathing equally on both sides.
