My first race!

I ran an impromptu 4 mile New York Road Runners race today.  Yea!  Allie (my friend, former roommate, and running inspiration) had registered for the race but then realized that she was going to have to work.  Alas, her race registration was going to go to waste.  Never fear though, because of the goodness of her heart she offered me her race number, assuring me that my race time (clearly slower than her 8:34/mile pace) wouldn't negatively affect her (ha, right) and that I should give it a shot.  I took the number, figured that I'd see how I felt when the alarm went off at 7am on a Sunday (ugh) and go from there.  Well, I tossed around the idea of sleeping through it, consoling myself with the thought that I'd run 4 miles yesterday and I shouldn't overdo it, but when my mom texted at 7:24 wishing me luck I figured, what the hell!  And I'm so glad I did.

Allie had told me that I'd probably want to start with the purple or brown group and I selected the brown one just for comfort sake.  It was the right choice.  Everyone around me paced between 11:00 and 11:30/mile which was perfect.  I was armed with my new ipod shuffle (the cutest, tiniest piece of technology I've seen) and didn't once say outloud or even to myself that I hate running.  That in itself is improvement!  I definitely broke up my run with more than a few walk breaks, but I finished 37 seconds faster than yesterday at 46:06 or an 11:30/mile pace.  I'm pretty happy with that for sure.

Sadly, I haven't had the same rush of endorphins as yesterday, but the run was nice and fun and made me feel proud.  I may not enjoy running for running sake, but the race was great.
