My Third Swim Class: The Big Kid's Pool
Wednesday was the first day that my swim class did full laps in the 50 meter pool and I felt simultaneously like a bad ass and a wimp.
Normally we practice in the "health and wellness" pool which is only 25 meters, four feet deep and 10 degrees warmer than the 50 meter pool, which is 12 feet deep. But on Wednesday our instructor took us to the 50 meter pool so he could check our form and endurance.
At first I felt like a bad ass because I was zipping around my other class mates in the pool and the instructor had me demonstrate my stroke because it was so good (oooo la laaa!). But then I felt like a wimp because after 400 meters I was exhausted and wanted a break at the wall -- but all my classmates were still going! It was a classic turtle and hare moment.
Lesson: Learn to pace. I remember learning this lesson when I learned how to run too -- that if I slowed down just a little I could ultimately run longer and farther.

Oh, I'm so jealous! I want a big kids' pool! And proper grown-up swim instruction.
Sadly, these things do not exist in Philly.

Hi gotigers2003 -- I take classes in DC, but a friend of mine takes similar sounding classes that she loves at YMCA - the mcburney branch on 14th st. She said other Ys offer similar classes too. I hope this helps. Keep me posted if you sign up!

Thanks! I've heard about the classes at the Y but didn't know anyone who had tried them. Good luck with your classes. I'll keep you posted!
