HOLES IN MY HAND

My ripped hands

March 23, 2010 - Los Angeles, CA.  I went through a personal revolution today.  I glanced over my body with the fresh scars on both knees from my 200 knee pushups the other day, bruised shins from the barbell during deadlifts, bruised sternum from rack position during thrusters, black toenail from running sprints, and now the open skin on my palms this morning.

For the warmup, we ran a 400m, did squats, lunge/sun salute combos, and then 10 minutes of box jumps and ladders.  This was a great warmup to our Workout Of the Day because it gave us confidence on which box to jump onto, and which one could be a reach.

How gnarly is this workout??  55 reps of pullups, box jumps and toes to bar.  I finished with a bit of a slow time, 16 minutes...but I moved to a SMALLER pullup band - yeeehaw!  I used a 24" box, but then added 10lb round plates on top to add a few more inches to reach 30".  How f'ing crazy.

The highlight of the 16 minutes came at around the 14 minute mark when I was on the set of 3's.  My palms hurt like crazy because the skin kept rubbing really hard.  I knew there were only a few reps left, so just kept my focus and trudged on.  However, during my kipping pullups, something happened.  All of a sudden, I felt a new layer of skin come directly in contact with the bar.  I jump down and saw my epidermis raveled up with new red fleshy pieces staring back at me.  Wow.  What just happened...

I ripped the skin off of my palms.  That's what happened.  I was on my last set of 1 rep, grimacing in pain and yelled to my coach Robert that my skin had fallen off.  "AGHHH!" I screamed during that last pullup.  1 last crazy high box jump then ran over to the bar again.  I placed my raw skinned hands back on the bar and did one last excruciating toe to bar up and called "TIME!!!!"  As soon as I called it, my coaches made me wash my hands, and they broke out the cuticle scissors and neosporin.  The other Crossfitters came over to look at my bloody hands, all with pretty much the same comment, "Ouch, so cool!  Welcome to Crossfit!"

Apparently, it's a right of passage.  I'm in the club.
