frustration & a paleo revelation

First the venting: what's happening to all my favorite classes at Crunch?! All of last year, I basically had an awesome class to look forward to every single day -- Mondays & Wednesdays spin with Ayana, Tuesdays hot yoga with Yummy, Thursdays I had Trainer Mike, Fridays pole dancing...now, I literally have NOTHING. Ayana left Crunch, Yummy gave up all after work-hour classes, pole dancing is always so full that I can't motivate myself to even go. It's so frustrating! I loved the classes and they added variety to my routine...now, other than Kangoo with Mario, I literally have nothing. UGH.

Today, I figured I'd give Yummy's replacement a shot. I lasted 30 minutes in the class and then did what I really never do: walked out. Yummy was easy-going. His favorite thing to say was "it's just yoga" -- basically telling us to stop taking ourselves so seriously. He'd crack jokes, poke fun at people and himself. It was perfect for me! Brooke, as Sandyliz pointed out to me later, used the words 'chakra' and 'third eye' within the first 3 minutes of class and even said that we should let her know if she gets "too heavy." Clearly, a completely different approach. But, that wasn't the only problem: her sequences didn't make any sense to me (there's nothing that makes sense about going from warrior 2 into chaturanga!!!) and I actually got out of breath because the breathing was all off. Then, probably because everyone is used to Yummy, nobody flowed with the class...everyone was doing their own thing, the energy was chaotic and unsettling. I also like Bikram sequences and there wasn't a single bikram pose...it was all vinyasa style, which honestly doesn't necessarily make tons of sense when your sweaty and can barely hold a pose. Oh, AND, unfortunately Brooke sounds moan-y and, well let's be frank, like she's in the middle of sexy-time. I found it ridiculous and funny and was giggling like a 13 year old boy. I wasn't getting anything out of the class, so I left. Sad.

But, overall, I did get a decent workout in. Before my 30 minutes of yoga, I'd done a quick 2 miles on the treadmill (7-8mph which I NEVER do), pull-up and dip practice alternated with 100 squats total. Then, I finished with 50 push-ups. It wasn't amazing, but the speed of the run felt great. And, I didn't have any foot pain for the first time in a long time! I bought these little cushion-y things that seem to be doing their job. This is definitely good news for the 1/2 on Sunday!

Oh, and I should mention a total paleo revelation! Portobello mushroom caps, lightly heated in a pan make fore an AMAZING "bun!" The texture is almost perfect, it holds up great, and the flavor is light. It was a really great "delivery mechanism" for my cilantro-lime chicken burger! I honestly felt like I was eating a traditional-style burger! I rounded out the meal with a salad with tomato, cucumber, and sundried tomato in a lemon dijon dressing. PALEO SUCCESS!

stop stealing my thunder!

I'm going to describe all the details of her counting, just because everyone will want to read the moaning.

Cushiony things that make running more comfortable - details please!  Will they help me with my shin splint situation?

starry04's picture

@starry: it's these guys...but i'm using them on the side of the foot where my pain seems to originate. i don't have a callous, but somehow it's helping. i doubt they'd do anything for shin splints though :-(

if you're doing a lot of treadmill running, the biggest cause of shin splints is running without any incline. even if you put a 0.5 incline that'll help tremendously!

ah got it - i'm going to try that .5 incline tonight.  will it make my run harder though?

starry04's picture

it's pretty negligible i think. you'll do great!
