Workout
pitter, patter, clunk, clunk, swisp (aka disconcerting unplugged city walk)
a walk in the park with no ipod. no problem... mostly quiet, lovely and meditative with hints of laughter, a nice sax, sweet birds and echoes from the ice skating rink. the portion of the walk through the city w/ no ipod - eww! so uncomfortable, too 'close' to people so to speak and the only thing fueling a quick pace is the desire for the whole disconcerting event to be over. however, i must admit, for a few moments, i found a great beat with water drops, some light construction and a street sweeper - pitter, patter, clunk, clunk, swisp (repeat).
complete workout - yoga/stretch 15min, 79 pushups (13 straddle, 26 1-leg, 40 knee), 100 side-to-side squats, 5 desk dips, jacks 7 sets of 75, unplugged lunch walk to central park 45min

I teach a class to new theatre students (an after-school program at the All Stars Project's Youth Onstage Community Performance School.) One of my homework assignments is for them to spend at least 1 hour without their ipods, phones, dash's, whatever... etc. and to listen to the world and to journal it. I also ask them to take another hour to be more aware of light - natural or otherwise, the colors, the shadows, the source, the interplay with the surroundings... and to journal that as well. It's a great exercise and often spurs lots of wonderful discussion.

what a great idea! i bet they will remember it and probably repeat it from time to time throughout their lives.
