Workout
Workout with the new trainer
1 hour strength training.
---
I've been skipping out on the gym a lot lately because I haven't been sleeping well (ie at all). Street noise has been bothering me more than usual lately, and if I put in ear plugs, I get all panicky about missing the alarm and sleeping through work. So I'll just lie there all stressed out till 4am and finally doze off till 8, when I rush to get to work. Lameness. Nothing has helped -- not even my usual standby, uhhhh, "herbal remedy."
Finally figure out a solution last night: earplugs + two alarm clocks turned to full blast, placed a foot from my head. Full night of sleep FTW!
Finally made it into the gym today for my 1 hour session with the new trainer. He showed me the strength training moves he wants me to replicate on my own twice this week. It's not a hard workout, but it targets all of my weakest areas, so it's a nice challenge. 12 out of the 13 exercises don't rely on weight at all, which is kinda nice.
We figured out a training schedule for the rest of the week and we're off. Next week: speed drills. Eep!
In other news, I started a 6 week paleo challenge today. A week will include 4-6 cardio workouts, 3 strength training workouts, 2 yoga classes, 7 days of 100% clean paleo eating, 1 freebie / treat meal, and tracking absolutely everything. I'm giving up nuts and nut butters, seeds, fruits and sweeteners for the duration of the challenge, because those are all foods that either cause cravings or I can't portion control.
The light at the end of the tunnel is an island vacation in April. I haven't decided where, but there is a bikini involved, so it's time to get down to biznass.

Allow me to be the bad cop here...I know you have a goal but given the restrictions of the Paleo diet limiting fruits and nuts entirely just seems like a bad idea. Especially with the amount of exercise you plan to do. Since you already limit starchy carbs and grains from yor diet how are you going to get your carbs that are necessary for your body during intense workouts. Aside from that fruits are awesome sources of antioxidants. How are you going to get your healthy fats? If you do what you are planning you are going to rely on burning protein for energy. First of all it doesn't burn cleanly and you will lose muscle.
The whole point of the Paleo diet is that all of these foods are designed for your body to process. None of it is bad for you. But if you must an alternative I would suggest would be limiting fruits and nuts after your last workout (5pm if you workout in the morning). This will give your body the energy it needs and you will be healthier. You will also be less apt to cravings.
Just looking out for you...

Hey killerc, didn't see this till just now. I've gone a few days without fruit and nuts, and all my sugar cravings are gone. Which absolutely rocks, because I've been seriously plagued by those cravings for a few weeks now. Suuuucks! I'm pretty sensitive to fructose, I think, because an hour after eating an apple with almond butter, my stomach swells up and I get light headed. So another nice side effect has been less bloat and dizziness.
I've been eating veggies by the ton, so I'm getting plenty of carbs and fiber. Not sure if I'm really missing out on a whole lot by skipping the fruits. I do think I'll add back berries at some point because they don't cause the bloat or light headedness.
You're definitely right about getting enough healthy fat, and I think I'm going to add nuts back in gradually. Maybe starting with the ones I don't like as much (does ANYONE love Brazil nuts??). I've added in coconut oil and cut out the canola, so I'm getting some healthy fat that way. I also eat a lot of avocados (technically a fruit, right?).
I think I just needed a detox for my system because I was seriously overdoing it with the nuts, nut butters and fruit. Like literally a thousand calories or more in a day from just those 3 things. Not cool.
By the way, have you guys tried coconut milk in your coffee? Uh may zing.

Oh, uh, I should mention that my macro breakdowns are 20% carb, 40% protein, 40% fat. And most of that fat's coming from coconut milk and avocados. I feel downright decadent!

awesome! glad to see you have a clear reasoning behind everything you're doing...and yes, the decadent feeling is totally mutual. i love me some fats.
oh and i will be trying the coconut milk in my coffee very soon...how did i never think of that?!

Msh, it's not the canned stuff, it's the stuff you find in the fridge section by the soy milks. It's definitely not 100% paleo since they do add vitamins to it, but ohhhh my god, it has the most creamy texture that makes my coffee taste downright sensual. It's as close to cow's milk as I've ever tried — almond milk's got nothing on coconut!
