Workout
can you superdork that?

- the slow foot movement
What? For every 1000 downhill skiers/boarders, there is like one snowshoer/xc skier? I was one of the few, the proud, the superdork in snowshoes, finally crossing the 20th 10,000th step it up mark. Meanwhile, trying to navigate the treacherous path of the yogically correct, I'm sending my pedometer to people in Haiti friend in Bklyn who wants to give it a try. (Personally, I found checking in on the steps bothersome and prone to malfunction. But I'm a luddite. No doubt there's an iPhone app that works like a charm.)

Actually the iPhone apps suck. Just try to walk a little over 4 miles and you'll make your steps.

I imagine that if I ever tried to get off a ski lift in snowshoes, you would learn the true meaning of "superdork". Also, shouldn't steps in snowshoes count double or something?

Von: I think this is another thing we have in common: short strides. I'm w/ you on the 4 mile-ish estimate. But they say 10,000 steps is typically around 5 miles. Whoever "they" are.
Sesh: I'll take the double counting! But, really, once you get into the stride it is pretty much like walking, except for when you trip over your own snowshoe (Snowshoes on a ski lift sounds like fun! JUMP!).

I've always wanted to try snowshoeing! I love xcountry skiing, but haven't done it in years. Do you own your snowshoes or did you find a place to rent them?

I do in fact own my own pair, though for sure you can rent them. I got mine on sale after being pointed in the direction by experienced 'shoers: MSR. They used to be the cheapest but then they kept getting great reviews so I think their price is a little more competitive now. They're REALLY ugly! But in a kind of Charlie Brown kind of way, and when snow-covered it doesn't really matter.
