Thank you SW
Thanks so much, team, for my t-shirt and Clean Plates. I suspect Katie B was behind this. I'm so very appreciative and will wear my Eat.Sweat.Blog t-shirt proudly. New challenge looks great. Very honored to know SW and see how she's grown. What a difference a year makes!!!
Happy Birthday to Oliver!!!
On behalf of all SW readers, thank you for making this a positive and fun place to connect and learn. Happy Birthday!!!

Yoga Fridays (well, everyday is kinda yoga day when you're a yoga teacher). Today is practice first, Keith's 3pm at YogaWorks Downtown. There's not a big YW presence on this here blog. We move and we teach alignment there. Keith's Friday at 3 is legendary in its difficulty and fun. It's a good time for all whether you can do some of the peak poses or not.

My favorite Iyengar teacher, Carrie Owerko, is getting ready to go up for her next level of Iyengar certification (senior miss or some such). She's practicing her sequence on students.

Took my boyfriend Keith's class this morning at YW. Always great.

walked my talk
Did the practice I taught on Sunday night before I taught it. Yummy, quad and hamstring opening, really getting into the legs plus much backbending. Being careful though with still sensitive groin/thigh mystery pull.

Lots of yoga on fridays. Groin is back in gear. Great to be practicing without serious limitations...physical that is.
Workout
you're bigger than this
I love me my Edwin at YogaWorks. We are buds from a while back, having assisted the 200 hour teacher training together. Needed something mellow this morning as I'm off to speak at a non-profit about my book, You're Accepted. Edwin is always right on with his energy and bigger perspective on the practice. Loves!

supta virasana
First group class since the groin issues of late. Chrissy's level 2 6pm YW downtown. Good to see my buddies. Happening to be big psoas strengthening class, last thing I needed. But I spent much of the end of class on my own in supta virasana trying to stretch the sucker out. Felt great.

Deep up in #2
I learned yesterday from SW and Self mag that my hometown Bethesda, MD is the #2 fittest place for women or (best place for fit women, or befitting of the best women). Read it on the train as I was headed down to speak at my high school on my book You're Accepted, which applies yoga philosophy to the college admissions process. Heading back into the Lion's Den as B'town is pretty br

OMG, the live streaming is so cool. What's just trippy is Waimea Bay is still, flat, calm as can be in the summer time. Always beautiful though.

The creator of the TRX, Randy, is a great friend of mine from business school at Stanford. He worked on the product and business plan throughout school. I used to be his model during marketing class demonstrations. It's a very cool idea that is taking off! He has an entire gym in San Francisco with group classes led on the TRX. Not for the wimpy. Serious core work-out!!!

Thought I'd chime in since I teach for YogaWorks. First, soho isn't our only studio. If you want a grittier scene, go to Downtown (18th/5th) where I teach. Also, please check the type of class. Not all yoga is flow style (at all!). I think I know which class you went to at Soho, and it's not flow. There are more flow classes at soho, but that's not what YW is known for teaching. Our method is based on the two classic systems of Ashtanga and Iyengar. We use the movement, breath based elements of Ashtanga (so you'll probably get sun salutations and what people call 'vinyasas' between standing poses) but you'll also get a lot the technical instruction of Iyengar (which includes holding poses to be in stillness). Yes, we do take our teaching very seriously. We want to help you learn how to do the poses, be with your breath, and see what opens up. Turning you on with sexiness isn't what we're after or at least not me. At its root, yoga is a philosophical system to connect you with your Self or source or (fill in the blank for whatever you want). Hatha yoga, the physical practice we do in the west, is just one type. But there's karma yoga (helping others), bhakti yoga (devotion), etc. In fact, the term ashtanga wasn't originally just this physical practice. Ashtanga classically refers to the 8 limbs of yoga -- asana, the physical practice, is just one of the limbs. Others include pranayama (breath work), yamas and niyamas (behavior toward others and ourselves), pratyahara (withdrawal of the senses), dhrana (concentration - what we're working on when we make you hold things) and dhyana (meditation) and of course samadhi (when we merge with the object of our meditation). Those are the elements we're trying to teach and different styles go about this in different ways. All of this to say different strokes for different folks. But, as a teacher, I always recommend you check what a class is called. And try out YW downtown. It doesn't feel like a gym or a mall and has some of the best instructors I've ever known.

Fear not! You'll lie on the floor with your knees bent. You'll stand on a block and let your leg hang. It's all really simple stuff that you can learn to do at home. Jonathan is the least "yogi hoo-hah" yoga teacher you'll ever meet. He's totally no B.S.

That ride over the GW bridge and through the Palisades is awesome. But, yes, one must get over whatever needs to be gotten over to put on the spandex bike shorts with the ginormous maxi-pad butt protection. Do it!

Carrie's my teacher from diapers! For those not in on the know, diapers means the Iyengar Institute. Fear not the short shorts in that place. You can wear your regular yoga duds. Carrie now has two classes a week at YogaWorks Soho - both level 3's so you should have some Iyengar experience. Thurs night, 6:30 - 8:30. Sats, 1:30 - 3:30 (but goes until 4pm often).

We do ginger tea all the time in my apartment. Yum. Ginger is also a great addition to juices. Two examples from my juicing yesterday:
celery - kale- apple - ginger (super green and delicious)
carrot - cucumber - spinach -ginger (ends up being brown because of the carrot, green combo, but still delicious)

If you like this, then you'll love Keith Yzquierdo's class at YogaWorks Downtown Fridays at 3pm. Augustin ain't got nothing on Keith's asana. Keith's also an excellent teacher and kind, humble soul. I'm biased because he's my boyfriend. And he'll be horrified to know I pimped him out this way! Friday's at 3 is an especially fun class, very social workout. Full teaching schedule at:

Very cool pic, Oliver. Maybe you got it from the Fitness Anywhere website? My friend Randy from Stanford invented the TRX and started Fitness Anywhere. I'm pretty sure I told you about him. He was a Navy Seal for many years before coming to b school and making me demo early TRX versions in marketing class. Anyway, cool to hear that others are using the TRX with their trainers. Randy's awesome. Big heart, great product.
