Acu-PLEASURE!
I am gearing up for the NYC Marathon in less than two weeks. All my long runs are complete, now it's all about maintanence with 4 & 5 milers thru Bklyn. I have been suffering abit from some ache and discomfort in my left inner ankle and left wrist. I decided to hit up my favorite acupuncturist (who relieves me in allergy season) to see what she could do.
meditation class??
Anyone know of a good beginner meditation class either in brooklyn or manhattan. Ideally looking for something that gathers tuesday mornings? Thanks for your input.

I've been a devout yogi for almost 3 years now and a long distance runner for nearly about the same (NYC Marathon '07 and again this year '09 BABY!). However I suffer from pretty severe seasonal allergies which also get in the way of my exercise routine. One day my acupuncturist, during a treatment, rubbed this amazingly aromatic oil on my chest and over my sinuses.

Good for you for running a marathon! You should check out the book "Running A Marathon for a Non-Runner". It helped me run the NYC Marathon 2 years and transformed me from couch potato into a running lover. Clear, concise, totally doable training plan. The key to running long distances is finding the joy in it. Especially in those last miles, only the joy will carry you through, and when it does, you will discover a strength in yourself you never knew you had. Good luck!!

I've run 2 marathons and my advice is to definitely take it easy this week. When you run, do 2-3 miles max, maybe even walk a few miles for your last run. Yoga is a great compliment too! You're not going to build up or add any strength or endurance to your game in these last few days before the race. The more your muscles can rest the better. Also, if this is your 1st marathon, if I can offer one piece of advice, by mile 10 you want to feel like you are just getting started, so for the first 10 miles force yourself to run SLOWER than you think. Let all the other crazies pass you, you'll be smiling when you pass them at mile 20! Good luck!!

Hi-
I was reading your post about arthritis and I can relate. My mom has pretty severe arthritis in her legs and is a big time walker. For the past 6 months she has successfully been using wintergreen and marjoram oil rubbed onto her knees and found AMAZING relief from arthritis pain. Both oils are natural anti-inflammatories If you are into alternative healing you can get the oils at www.youngliving.org/nycoils or you can email me back at frankwild1@hotmail.com with any ??'s (ps, epsom salt baths also help with joint pain!)

yoga and acupuncture are wonderful for running! i've run 2 marathons and always use acupuncture to trouble shoot my aches and pains (try bianca beldini www.sacredspaceacupuncture.com- she used to be a physical therapist and is now an acupuncturist so you get both Eastern and Western medicine) yoga is a great compliment to running, i usually try to run 4 days a week and supplement with yoga 2-3 days

Hey- I was just reading your post and thought your friend might want to check out my site www.runeasier.com In brief, I am a physical trainer for new and fledgling runners. I help them create and maintain a running schedule, advise them on any running questions or concerns they might have, and am out there on the streets running alongside them. My runners stay responsible for their own progress by knowing that someone else (me) is looking out for them. Check it out and let your friend know to feel free to contact me! All the best, Frank

Have you thought about giving bikram yoga a try? If you desire a hot and sweaty workout without the high impact, it might be a perfect fit for you... just a thought.

I really like Bikram Downtown on Fulton- super clean, usually not to crowded and the owners Troy and Aiko not only own but also teach there too (they have a sister studio in Bklyn Heights too)!

Hey Von Hottie-
i have had pretty awesome results using peppermint oil as an all natural stimulant. You put on drop on the tongue (or you can mix it with a glass of water) and almost immediately you'll feel it not only give you a pick me up, but it helps clear out your sinus cavities and it helps soothe upset stomachs too! Check out www.youngliving.org/nycoils for a great therapeutic version (only 100% therapeutic grade oils can be ingested) Feel free to drop me a line with any relevant ??'s as I use essential oils for all kinds of everyday issues from headaches to muscle pain, etc... Best, Frank

Not sure where you live but I practice at a studio in Brooklyn Heights on Montague Street. The owners are two Broadway actor/dancers (Troy & Aiko) and they are always present, esp in the evenings. They have a beautiful sister studio on Fulton Street called Downtown Bikram, very clean and airy. Great space!
