We're not taking a clinical position on the stretching debate. If you missed it in The Times last year, check out Gina Kolata's wonderful "To Stretch or Not to Stretch," which points out that "after dozens of studies and years of debate, no one really knows whether stretching helps, harms, or does anything in particular for performance or injury rates."
We will say this, however: Donna Flagg's one-hour stretching class at the Joffrey Ballet School is the bomb. And perhaps "injury rates" aren't really the most relevant metric for most of us (we're not exactly dancing for Twyla Tharp or playing tight end for the Giants....) The class is called Lastics, and Flagg has developed all kinds of ways to elongate and strengthen your muscles, helping to make you lither and more flexible. If yoga isn't quite your thing, or you want to experiment with a dance-oriented take on flexibility, check it out. Flagg is very upbeat, and her class goes down in a sunny ballet studio, both of which don't suck. All-black leotards and hair wind in a tight bun are generally preferred.
Deets: Monday or Thursday at 6 P.M., or Saturdays at 2:30 P.M. Drop ins welcome, and it's $15 per session.
