- Body & Pole (via bodyandpole)
Nestled in the back of The Fierce Club yoga studio on Elizabeth Street, Body & Pole features neon Buddha wall art, exposed brick, and glistening 14ft poles. Lian Tal, the founder of Body and Pole and a nationally recognized pole athlete, explains to me what makes her studio different. It's personalized and intimate, with classes limited to twelve people, plus "We offer a flexible schedule with no commitment, to women or men.” Yes gentlemen, now you can pole dance, too!
Lian says her inspiration for opening Body & Pole was to allow students to hone their skills while allowing their individual style to shine. For my first session at Body & Pole, it was just me and Kyra Johannesen. I have been taking pole dancing for over a year, many of the classes taught by Kyra at Crunch. But one-on-one, she and I had the chance to evaluate my strengths and weaknesses and work on some moves that would challenge me physically and creatively.
For me, pole dancing is a form of self expression, like any form of dance. Each dancer has their own style, rhythm and preference of movements. Kyra quickly identified my style as more of a classic vibe. I enjoy doing tricks as much as the next girl but for me it's in the slow details. Holding a posing and flipping my hair or pointing my toes in a turn and taking it ALL the way to the floor. For an hour Kyra and I worked on tricks, spins, and improving my overall strength and flexibility. I was sore in the best way possible for the next few days. For those of you looking for some facts in all this, according to Lian you burn anywhere from 300-450 calories in one hour of pole dancing.
If you're curious, Body & Pole is waiting for you at 269 Elizabeth Street.
