I have recently had the kind of experience that gives the health club industry a bad name. I am so concerned and frustrated by the experience I plan to voice my concerns as far and as wide as it is possible so that others do get find themselves in my position. I am now $410 dollars in the hole to Soma Health Club due to their deceptive and manipulative business practices.I signed a one year contract with Soma from July 2008 to July 2009. I moved from Brooklyn to Manhattan in May and had asked about early termination of memberships. As that wasn’t an option as the termination fee was as much as the rest of my contract, I said I would pay through July and be done with it and the woman with whom I spoke said that was fine. I thought that would be the end of it and didn’t think any further. Frustrating but still in the contract. However I have recently been going through my finances and I have been getting charged by Soma $82 a month every single month despite the fact that my membership was up in July. IT IS NOW DECEMBER!No one ever called to ask if I wanted auto renew and given that I spoke with someone about paying through to the end of my contract in July and they said that was fine and that would be the last charge I am obviously appalled to discover that I have been continued to be charged. They are now telling me I have to physically come in and sign a form saying I do not want to auto-renew and they are fighting me about getting my money back. Really? Why not tell me this when I said I was done in July hmmm? And naturally the member advisor told me that it was doubtful I would get my money back. Clearly it is upsetting that I have only just discovered this and I should have found it earlier but this is not appropriate in any way regardless. As far as I am concerned they should refund me five months of dues or $410 dollars. I am concerned however that I will have to take them to court for this. I have plans to report them to the Better Business Bureau and send a report to Consumerist.com. I have already voiced my concerns on Yelpand Yahoo local reviews. These people do not deserve your money or your time. Do not even consider joining. They will only try to rip you off. Please help me spread the word.
