Yoga Music: Yes, No or Sitars Are for Pussies?

Michael Franti Rocks! (Via The Ski Channel.)

The music question is tricky. Take runners. Some must run with music, others prefer the sounds of nature and their own breathing. The same question divides yogis. Purists practice without music, while others lovingly compile playlists ranging from acoustic harmonium to Boogie Wonderland. Some of the hottest yogis in L.A. are famous for blaring rock in class, and "yoga music" is now a booming music industry sub-genre, with groovy local labels. (And forget about Wanderlust, the music-festival-meets-yoga-marathon event.) All of which no doubt causes the Mysore set to roll its eyes. Is this just different strokes for different folks, or is there actually a right answer?

After a recent class where they played the Dawson's Creek theme song and "You're Beautiful" by James Blunt (twice!), I don't mind silence.

i could totally do yoga to tool though. nice, heavy beats, lurching rhythms, kind of like me... falling down... a lot...

Unless I'm controlling the playlist, give me silence - it might not be ideal, but there's nothing worse than a crappy song at the wrong moment. (erikka - TWICE?? That's cruel and unusual punishment.)

For me, it's an indoor/outdoor thing. I don't need music outdoors-but prefer it when working out indoors. Specifically for yoga, I'm indifferent. Stephanie always plays great music for yoga and I like it.
