No Food Stamps For Soda?

Soda Ad

New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg really hates soda. First there were the awesomely disgusting anti-soda ads all over the city. Then there were the even more awesomely disgusting anti-soda TV ads. Then there was the unsuccessful attempt to get a state tax on sodas. Now Bloomberg has filed for federal permission to keep the city's 1.7 million food stamp recipients from using their food stamps to buy soda and sugary drinks. Misguided social engineering or totally awesome step forward for public health?

I don't see how not providing food stamps is telling anybody what they can or cannot drink. It's just not subsidizing the choice.

Food stamps aren't earned by the people using them. If the state issues the food stamps from a state-owned welfare program out of compassion, at least they should be able to control what you can get with them. Bottom line, you get a choice only when you earn it.

I agree with spin on this one. The government shouldn't be willing to pay for something terrible for its people.
