Do You Shower At The Gym?

Shower (via krikit)

The New York Times is out with a story about skin infections at the gym. Basic gist: You're going to get athlete’s foot, jock itch, boils, impetigo, herpes simplex, ringworm, or a deadly staphylococcus infection from gym equipment unless you're vigilant, vigilance meaning always assuming you've been exposed and showering at the gym immediately after working out, using antibacterial soap over your entire body, and carrying two bags, one for clean clothes, one for dirty clothes, and never the twain shall meet. I don't want staphylococcus or anything, but I also kind of hate showering at the gym, and having to carry two bags might be a fate worse than ring worm. Your thoughts?

Showering at the gym is 50% of how I bribe myself to go.  I pack expensive beauty product samples that I only allow myself to use after a workout, and I make sure I have my bath scrunchie and shower flip flops (because I'm no fan of athlete's foot).  If I can also spend some time in the sauna or steam room before said shower, I'm a really happy camper.  Additional perk: someone else cleans the bathroom.

None of the above. I don't shower at the gym because I don't like the showers there and I'd rather shower at home. Also it means carrying extra stuff.

I just discovered there is a results tab. I always thought I had to vote to view them...

Does it count if you stand on your tippy toes and don't touch anything????

I used to only shower at the gym if I had to go someplace that wasn't home immediately after working out.  Since I moved this past weekend and am now only 5 minutes from my primary Y location, I figure the point is moot since I can now get in my shower at home shortly after working out.

Fraidy! You are brilliant! I didn't know about the results tab either until you said something!

I'm with zuzu.  And at Equinox the showers and locker rooms are fairly clean. That said, I have my gym flip flops which i wear in the shower and steam room - and I only sit on a fresh towel in the steam room and use fresh towels to dry off with, and another fresh towel to sit on when I'm dressing.  I wrap my dirty clothes in plastic bags and that's that.  No fuss, no muss. When I have a hot and hard workout, then hit the steam followed by a great shower, it feels amazing... sensual even, and I haven't gotten one infection in the 2 years I've been showering at the gym.
