Mysore and Mrs. Dalloway A number of Social Workout regulars are fans of Yoga Sutra (on Fifth Ave. across from the New York Public Library), but I had never been. Nor had I been to a Mysore-style Ashtanga class, wherein students in the room practice the "primary series" on their own, while the teacher makes the rounds, offering adjustments or encouragement. Maybe it was the passing of Pattabhi Jois, or may just the need for a change, but I decided to give it a try....
Leigh Evans' Vinyasa For me, too hard. Or so I thought. And at the end, I felt great. And tired. And stretched out. And isn't that what we look for in yoga?
angelic ashtanga Led Ashtanga 730pm with Erica at Yoga Sutra. First class FREEEEE (yay) and they give you a week s-sp-special! This one had some variations in it that I've never come across in my wee, 3 led ashtanga class career. a whole series of postures starting in halasana (plow) where you hold onto your feet and then rock up to balance on your sit bones.
Pillows and blankets. I decided to take an Iyengar class today. I really wanted to do something more aggressive like Vinyasa, but I've just started to get into the swing of things so overdoing it might be a recipe for punking out of my routine. My sad and weak arms awkwardly carried a 20lb lamp for a few blocks today so they were not happy with me today.
Tight as tight First day in... I don't even know...
Proprioception, or Where the Body Goes, the Mind Follows First, I quote Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proprioception):
My Sore? Yes, it is a town in India renowned for it's Yogic teachings. But after the second round of the first Sun Salutation, all I could think is that the name is a statement of athletic pride. Like when in high school, I was in a rifle line where large bruises were equal to accomplishment. Look how sweaty I am, other Ashtanga followers!
I'm all sweaty and my pants are falling off Lunchtime Vinyasa with Guta Lots of movements, plus challenge for me. My body says "this is not what I meant when I said I wanted yoga" But it really is what it meant. Except for figuring out I had been doing Up Dog wrong for a long time, and the correct way is much harder. We could have done without that, both body and mind.
Plank? Again? A brief recap of my Vinyasa General Level with Leigh: Me: Okay, great, this will be fun, and relaxing. Body: That instructor looks a bit tough. She was wearing biker boots when she came in. Me: You're overreacting. Just do it. Body: Well, I do need some stretchy stuff. You know, you really should take better care of me. I mean, when was the last time...
May 13 - Yoga & also need exercise tips for Berlin & Rome Went to David Hollander's 1.5 hr int/adv vinyasa class at Yoga Sutra, which was particularly sweaty and crowded today. Was still really good, and I was literally pouring sweat, which I love. Haven't been to his class in about a month, and he was missed. <3
May 4th (not an "exciting title") 1.25 hour intermediate vinyasa class w/ Kevin Ryder. Finally holding forearms stands and handstands for a little longer than usual, which makes me happy. It wasn't as sweaty of a class today, but still fun!
