Back In The Gym.... After The Flu April is around the time I have to watch out for germs, since my allergies always start kicking in around now and the stress of finals as well. But I got complacent, not keeping my distance around maybe-sick people, staying up late for no reason, not washing my hands with after coming home, etc. So, I got sick.
Under The Weather Didn't really want to go to the gym today because I was feeling a little sick... bit of a sore throat, runny nose type of thing. I went anyways. 13 reps with perfect form for chin-ups, deadlifts (185#), clean and jerk (85#) and box squats (120#)... then 8 minutes of man-makers (finished 18 reps... with lots of gaspy pauses.... gosh they're hard) with 20# dumbbells.
I normally don't workout this much but..... I haven't been to the gym in two weeks and I wanted to start off with a bang. I normally keep to about five different movements and some light mobility work, maybe with some rowing sprints or light cardio thrown in for variety, but today's workout turned my stomach and left me winded. Call me a masochist but it felt amazing.
Glutes Out Of Commission For A While So... deadlifts and back squats are going to be out for a while =( My right glute started acting up again today after just three squats into my first set of 3x10s. Luckily, lunges and good mornings are still in, but it's just not the same. I'm going to try to lay off the heavy lower body movement for a month just to see how it does.
Back to Convention Switched gears today, moving to a more conventional workout style similar to the type I used to do when I first started lifting. 3x10s was the goal on each movement. I didn't get there on more than half of my lifts, but squeezing out some of those final reps to failure somehow made me feel über-productive.
It was hard Sorry, couldn't come up with a more creative title today. Today's workout started out well enough, with some mobility drills, stretches, some easy yoga poses just to get the blood circulating. Then I moved on to the real work. 3 x 3 cleans (105#)4 rounds of the following: 7 pull-ups + 7 barbell front raises (35#) Then:4 barbell rollouts (95#) + 4 good-mornings (95#)
Short, but Tough Though I don't do splits, today's workout ended up being more focused on shoulders and chest. Fantastic, since I find these two are my weakest body parts. I repeated the warm-up to max singles on the floor press today (while lowering my target max from 150 to 120#) and did a few oddball club exercises.
I lifted more than I've lifted in my life While I concede that I probably won't be able to finish the feral challenge thanks to spring break and a burn-out of my drive to do this (as delicious as the venison jerky sounds), I see no reason to use it as an excuse to laze around. I didn't want to go to the gym today. I use my campus gym and its a 20 minute commute, minimum. I needed groceries and had to clean my apartment.
