Long Time No Blog Hey Social Workout! Sorry it's been so long since I last blogged. I've been diligently logging my workout minutes, but between my move, my wedding planning, and my other summer responsibilities (such as being captain of our charity kickball team), I haven't had the focus to maintain my exercise journaling.
It takes a LOT of energy to work out when it's this hot. There was no way I was running outside today. Scooted on over to Crunch Park Slope for a nice-and-quick 3 mile treadmill sesh, followed by a delicious iced coffee date with my lovely gym buddy, whom I am trying to get to join SW. I have almost convinced her.
Strength Prescription for Transition Times Some of you may know that I have recently moved back to New York after three (long) years away. This is a joyous occasion, but it has also been marked by an extended period of 'transitioning' -- sleeping on friends' couches while apartment hunting, living out of a suitcase, going to the gym every single day simply because I do not have a shower to use elsewhere. You get the picture.
Threefer Workout #1: Yesterday, met my friend Ilona at Park Slope Crunch. Did 3.25 miles of speed intervals on the treadmill, followed by triceps and shoulders, with a bit of ab work to top it off.
An Update Without specific feats to complete or required blogs to write, I've been quietly logging my minutes this month. I was a little discouraged for a while because of a neck injury, followed by some legal issues I had to attend to, but now I'm back at the gym and starting to readjust to heavy lifting in the mornings.
Exercise in Absentia I began the Million Minute Month challenge from San Francisco, where I was visiting for work. I managed a modest start, getting in weightlifting workouts most mornings and jog or long walks around town, and I even discovered a hitherto unknown 24 Hour Fitness near Fisherman's Wharf that was much more convenient to my North Beach hostel than the Crunch on Polk Street.
Accumulating massive sleep debt 90 minute samba class + mexican food after 10pm = complete inability to go to sleep at a normal hour. So we caught up on Gossip Girl instead. Another short night of sleep (5-6 hours, instead of the normal 7-8), followed by 60 minutes of weightlifting, and a 45 minute bike commute.
Be-b-be-b-b-b-beat! Be-b-be-b-b-b-beat! GO BAYSIDE! Okay, so I can officially identify an episode of Saved by the Bell from the first 30 seconds of the show. Bayside to play Valley? Homecoming Queen to be picked? Must be the episode with the zit cream gone bad.
Saturday catch-up Friday night, I biked home from the LES in the rain after having hung out at Arlene's Grocery for a few hours, soaked through my jeans from the ride there. When I got home I thought I was going to die. So, I downed a half bottle of Vitamin C and went to bed. I woke up hours later a brand new woman, and started my weekend with a couple episodes of Melrose Place and a visit with
Clocking the minutes Now that I've got my categories straight, I'm going to try to maintain my position as leader of the Cycling, Spinning, and Rowing category! My 90 minute round trip bike commute definitely helps here. I probably wouldn't have biked today (as it's getting colder and it might rain today) if not for this feat.
Confusing start Having a hard time adjusting to thinking in terms of MINUTES. I can think in terms of reps, calories, feats, etc. -- but this minute thing is challenging (especially because I don't carry a phone/watch/time-telling device at the gym and the clocks at Crunch are all messed up). This morning, I did:
Yay for Gym Buddies My first thought when I got up this morning: I'm not going to the gym. I went onto facebook. A friend asked me what I'm doing today. (She's an ex-PT). She said she was going to the gym later. I told her I wasn't in the mood but she should call me before she goes. I went. We walked 2 miles to the gym. She kicked my butt.
one for formality forced myself to make sure i hit the gym for the first time in a week in what felt like forever. obviously i didnt last long in turning tricks. my instructor even yelled out - "dying!"
getting a real sweat on again so more recently ive been complaining that my workouts are finally plateauing and i need to step it up. Tried out Chisel today. holy crap. i kept staring at the clock and it felt like only 5 minutes passed after a million reps of hand weights. it was nice to get other muscles moving though.
Post-Passover cardio and the pull up that never was. Did 45 minutes on the elliptical while watching "Charmed", but all the magic in the world couldn't help me complete my pullup feat this morning. I bottomed out at 30 pounds of weight assistance, threw in the white Crunch towel, and headed home.
The Mayor of Park Slope Crunch Redux While this morning's workout was performed in the morning-after haze of Passover wine, it was not a complete wash, as I finally regained mayorship of Crunch Park Slope -- which I'd considered but rejected as a DIY feat idea -- on the final day of the Feralicious challenge.
Extension Today's workout was brutal on my upper body extension muscles -- pecs, delts, and tris. I went to maximum on close-grip decline press, and did many sets to failure on lateral raises and triceps extensions. For my core I did saxon side bends and dumbbell side bends. I decided to give my calves and legs a rest today, but I'll be back to working them tomorrow.
Cut! Another upper body workout. Pretty sure I'm not getting that full body pullup. BUT... I noticed some new definition in my arms and back this morning. I'm on my way!
Workout in which princessmichelle realizes that even a half pullup may not be attainable. Seriously, folks. I'm trying here. I've conquered my fear of jumping up to the bar, and I've prepared all month with serious upper body workouts. Can I get an extension?
