Mommy Yoga, Paleo Update, and a Long Friggin' Walk
Today I took a long friggin' walk. Before I got pregnant I used to walk miles a day, often 6 or 8. But it's been months since I covered ground like that...until today. I popped Jane into her sling, packed a bag, and walked 3 miles to mommy and me yoga, then 3 miles back. There was some serious shvitzing involved but it was good fun and I feel both tired and invigorated.
First Week on Paleo Diet
So, I've just finished my first week on my new paleo diet. To recap, here are the rules:
EAT: meat, fish, veggies, fruit, berries, nuts, seeds, olive oil and avocado
DO NOT EAT: grains, beans, rice, potatoes, *most dairy, or sugar
All in all it was a very easy week. Here's what I ate:
Breakfast - eggs with veggies and bacon
Going Paleo
So, I'm trying to drop the 25lbs still lingering around from my pregnancy and per the brilliant msh's suggestion I'm going to try a paleo diet. I like the approach for a number of reasons but mainly what I like is that I don't have to go too low calorie - a major concern for a breastfeeding mom.
On Diet
So, after a great pregnancy, easy labor, and an amazing first 8 weeks of my daughter's life, I'm ready to start tackling the 25 extra lbs still hanging on from my pregnancy. I'm breastfeeding, so it's super important that I not lose weight too quickly as rapid weight loss releases harmful toxins into breasmilk, and can jeopardize supply as well.
Baby and Dog
If you read my last post you'll recall that me and my 7 (almost 8) week old daughter Jane spend about an hour a day dancing together. It is fun and makes us both so happy. She weighs a little over 10lbs now so it's not a bad workout either. You should try it - grab a 10lb bowling ball and dance around with it...you'll at least break a sweat...
You Wrote We Like
Reborn
7 weeks ago I gave birth to my first child. A daugher. Jane.
Jane was born at home in our little London flat in a rented birthing pool. I was in labor for a total of 9 hours, the first 8 of which I spent dancing with my husband in our living room. I literally danced my way through the contractions.
Workout
Media Fasting is the Best Fasting
I have not worked out in 10 days. I could say I was busy (which I was) or that I was stressed (ditto) but the truth is, I haven't worked out because I haven't been taking care of myself. I've got too much going on at once and have gotten overwhelmed. As a result I haven't made my bed in 10 days (until today!), cooked a decent meal, or cleaned my ears in 10 days either.
Workout
Old Dudes and Steps
Once a month me and my dog visit old war veterans at an inpatient facility near Sloane Square. It's part of the Pets As Therapy program. It's always really exhausting for both of us so today I decided to wear a pedometer and see how far we were actually walking.
Workout
She's a Lady, Whoa Oh Oh She's a Lady
It's a girl! Junior is a girl. Her name is Jane.
I took Jane for a 3 mile walk with the dogs this morning. She kicked me a few times and then we came home and had a smoothie of blueberries, almond milk, yogurt and a banana.
Now I'm playing Sweet Jane on repeat on my itunes.

Walking & Swiss Ball Labor Exercises
I missed spinning again last night due to yakking. They tell you you're supposed to stop yakking in the second trimester but it is a lie, it continues.
Anyway, today I took the dogs on a 4 mile loop and we all came home exhausted. I did a few labor prep exercises on the swiss ball (squats, rolling the hips on the ball, and this cat/cow type thing) and am calling it a day.
Workout
A Nice Walk and a Roll in the Hay
Is there any better way to spend a Sunday than that? I don't think so.
Workout
Spinning with Child...again
I did a spinning class today. It was hard and the seat made my pelvic bones hurt, but it made me sweat and gave me a nice buzz.
Workout
Pregnant Circuits aka Junior Likes Bass
I took in a circuits class at the gym today. Generally you do 2 minutes at the rebounding station, 2 minutes at the jump rope station, and 2 minutes at the mat/free-weight station, but as I am pregnant and tend to vomit at the slightest bounce the gym was nice enough to wheel in a spinning bike for me so I could ride instead of rebounding and jump roping.
Workout
More Stretching
Did anyone read this slate piece http://www.slate.com/id/2241274/ about why we like stretching so much? Well is was kinda interesting. Anyway, I went to a stretching class at the gym today. It wasn't as good as the "Bend it like Barbie" class I did a few weeks ago but was still enjoyable and it didn't make me yak the way most things seem to lately.

What a fun day! I too used to be a gymnast and have been meaning to do a tramp class. Have you seen any soft tumbling classes anywhere? I'd love to tumble again but my old lady joints are unlikely to stand up to it - would love a soft tumbling class though...

I too was intrigued by this (I've been doing pilates for years and had never heard of psoas) so gave it a go last night. It is super relaxing! I felt muscles release all throughout my body - a very nice sensation, but I'm not sure there was anything sexual about it.

I've been a vibram devotee for a while now and was lamenting that they didn't come in kids sizes so I can get my little Jane a pair when she starts walking...I checked out vivobarefoots but I don't see any kids sizes - where can I find them??

I'm coming around to the idea of this as a lifestyle. I bought The Primal Blueprint book and it has some compelling arguments for eating this way (at least 80% of the time).
I've still got areas for improvement - I'm probably eating more fruit than primal man, and I ate bacon almost every day last week, but it's my first week so not going to be too crazy about it. We'll see how the weight loss goes and I'll adjust accordingly...

Hahaha, Sparetire McGillicuddy...too rich :)
I had a baby 8 weeks ago and am totally Sparetire McGillicuddy! Since I've got 25lbs to lose I'm focusing on diet (may well do the paleo program on Mark's Daily Apple that msh recommended) and not doing too much intense exercise. I've always found it super tough to lose weight when I'm exercising intensely. Maybe if you want to drop those last 20-25lbs you could cut back your exercise routine and go strict with your diet for a few months?

hmmm...paleo...good idea msh!
I just spent the last hour on mark's daily apple - good stuff there. My main concern with paleo is not to go into ketosis. I think I'll check out cordain's book, thanks for the recommendation.
As for losing weight because of breastfeeding, it's true that milk production burns 500 calories a day but most women put on 20lbs of fat during pregnancy and that fat is there so that the body can produce breastmilk. As such it can be very difficult to shed those lbs while breastfeeding because they are there to ensure milk supply. So some women say it helps youlose weight and others say you won't drop those 20lbs until weaning.

That seems like quite a high dose on the supplements - DoH recommends 10mcg/day which is more like 400 units. Can someone please define "mega-overdose" for me...

Do the photo shoot - you won't regret it! I did one as a wedding gift to my husband but reallly it was as much for me as it was for him. Make sure you like the photographer and if you can afford it, do more than one look.
I started out with sweeter looks copying this http://ash.atomkinder.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/marie-antoinette.jpg look from the Marie Antoinette movie and then another one completely nude but wearing a big floppy white straw hat. Then I the make up artist added more black eyeliner, and more shadow and I did a french maid shot and a rocker chick shot with a black fedora and my pink fender strat. Finally we added mega black around the eyes and did a copy of this outfit http://www.healthandbeauty.net.au/images/angelina-jolie-mr-and-mrs-smith... and one with a top hat, riding crop and boots.
Have fun with it, spend good money if you can (SO worth it), and enjoy the hell out of the experience.
Also, P.S. MAC makes an aerosol body make-up that hides ANYTHING and makes you look smooth all over!

This post is inspiring. I hope you go get yourself a mani/pedi and a massage, even if they're not in the budget. I hope you do your grocery shopping at Dean & Deluca, and maybe buy yourself a few new items of clothing or some new shoes. I hope instead of slaving over dinner you take yourself out for sushi. I hope you spend time with a really sweet puppy.

I love this post. This is me after about a thousand different diy attempts I've made over the years.
Hope you get a sexy plumber (oxymoron?) to make it all worthwhile :)

There's always pills, shrooms, and wheatgrass, but if you want my honest opinion, as someone who has to abstain from intoxicants due to the tiny mutant developing inside me, the only really good, decent natural high is orgasm ;)

You're not drinking because marijuana provides a better, safer, healthier high and protects against certain forms of brain cancer.

AMEN! Also, in addition to not being narcissistic fuckwads, did you know that petting a dog for 3 minutes produces the same oxytocin spike that nursing mothers experience when feeding their babies? So you can literally get all blissed out just from petting your furry friend...that sounded dirtier than I intended, but you know what I'm saying - give fido some love! Added bonus: the dog experiences the same oxytocin spike you do so it makes both of you all happy.

Dude, must have been taco night last night - I had fish tacos which are quite possibly the world's most perfect dinner. We made homemade corn tortillas which takes like 15 minutes more but is so freakin' delicious it's worth it...

A band name eh? How about Paradise Hotdogs? The wannabe hipsters will be stoked they got the Confederacy of Dunces reference, and the real hipsters will delight in the "12 inches of paradise" implication.
Too obscure?
How about WHAM 2, The Search for More WHAM...

Why aren't there skateboarding classes at the gym? There's so much you can do with them and I'd love some instruction on riding one! You should approach crunch about teaching such a thing...
