Which Coconut Water Are You?

Which Coconut Are You?

The battle is pitched, with secret partisans on all sides. Coconut water is all the range, of course, but are you a Zico person, or Vita Coco? Or maybe you avoid both in favor of a fresh nut with a straw?  The former companies have invested millions in coconut farms in Brazil and state-of-the-art "Tetra" paks, while fancy grocers -- and certain produce stands in Chinatown -- have purchased machetes and extra cooling space. What's your call? (Notes: We're  friendly with Vita Coco, but we want the unvarnished truth here. Also, got coconut water secrets? Please share in the comments.)

Due respect to the processed packaged versions, but there's no competing with straight from the nut, taste-wise. It is like nectar of the gods. Plus you get the coconut fruit.

ZICO is the most refreshing and purest coconut water other than the real thing. I agree, straight from the nut is great, but most places do not allow machetes in the building:) When I can't grab the real thing, I grab a ZICO for it's great taste.

Yeah, I've considered investing in a cleaver so I can DIY, but they're a little too scary. The little Burmese ladies who feed the my coconut fix at their take-out counter down the street blow me away with their coconut cleaving prowess. Would love to see this done with a machete!

piping in a bit late but curious why we are promoting this drink when the coconut farms mentioned above expand at the expense of tropical rainforest?
i've worked in brazil's northeast which is where US's coconut water comes from and the coconuts grow in the footprint of tropical rainforest (e.g in rainier areas). second only to sugarcane, coconut plantations now displace the most forest (not the Amazon but Brazil's coastal Atlantic forest) in these areas, not to mention carbon cost of transport from tropical climes (especially the full coconut). i get that its a good alternative to Gatorade but i'm not sure it's worth the price when you look at its full life cycle impact. and I definitely disagree w/the sites that tout it as low impact bc of its 'virtually zero processing and mostly eco-friendly packaging.'
