Eat This Not That
Two Essential Breakfasts for Deep Humidity

- Granola! (Via cuttlefish.)
I’m sorry to be such a Jewish grandmother, but I’m worried, dear reader, that you are not taking the time to eat a proper breakfast. I see you running out the door at 8:00 A.M., iced coffee and aspirin in hand, and my heart breaks. (If you're not careful, you'll end up like the French President.) Why don't you try the Olive Oil Granola, which I discovered recently courtesy of The Times, and it has changed my life....
Olive oil, I had thought was meant only for savory dishes— stir fries, salad dressings, a douse on roasted veggies — but I was wrong. The touch of savory in an otherwise sweet granola is almost immediately preferable to goopy, sugary, store-bought granola. Turns out you can make a big batch quickly and easily, and then you're in business for weeks. (In brief: The recipe calls for throwing raw oats, olive oil, sugar, salt, and spices in a big pan and baking. Simple as that. You might substitute agave for the sugar if you like. I add coconut milk to mine, plus a handful of blueberries.)
If all that sounds too complex, I've got another idea for you, which is ideal for the deep humidity. Two words: Frozen fruit. Mix a handful of frozen cherries -- I like the Whole Foods organic brand -- with a bowl of plain yogurt. Sprinkle on cinnamon, pumpkin and flax seeds, and mix all around. You’ll end up with a sort-of smoothie in a bowl, entirely sugar-free.
You can do it, honey!
And I’ll get off my soapbox now.

This sounds good. I'm going to whip up a batch!
One of my favorite breakfasts after a run is 1/4 cup plain, dry oatmeal, 1/2 mashed banana, about 2 Tablespoons chopped walnuts and a dash of cinnamon. Put it all in a bowl and add about 1/3 cup boiling water.
