Food Serving
Share the love: Do one shift with City Harvest or a another local food bank.
Here's the ultimate in social workouts. While we challenge our bodies to live a healthier October, we commit to collectively improve the communities that we live in. Take a little time and give back big.
City Harvest delivers over 25 million pounds of excess food free of charge to nearly 600 community programs throughout NYC. And they've got tons of ways you can get involved. CH hosts a volunteer orientation the 2nd Tuesday of each month (October 13th is the next), or, if that doesn't fly with your schedule, check out these other suggestions for how you can help in the New York area. For those challengers living outside of NYC, Feeding America can help you find a soup kitchen near you.

I can't make the 10/13 NY orientation so I went through Hands On (nice logo), which has an online orientation (at least in the Bay Area).
One Brick is another source with food-related volunteer ops. No orientation required.

Last weekend I volunteered at the Good Neighbor Center in Portland, a shelter for temporarily homeless families. I brought them food, and then cooked dinner that evening with about 5 other folks. The evening was a good experience.
It was awesome because the local farmer's market also donates fresh produce, so we made a great salad with tons of veggies, steamed corn off the cob, spaghetti with chunky pepper and meat sauce, and fresh peaches for dinner.
Today I was slated to volunteer at the womens shelter downtown, but with this lung infection, I'm stuck on the couch :(
