Yoga Live from MoMA Caught up with Susanna Harwood-Rubin last night after her 8 P.M. class at Virayoga, the SoHo hub of Anusara. Susanna told me about an extraordinary class that Virayoga founder Elena Brower taught at the MoMA in February: Over 100 people, spread out in the cavernous Marron Atrium, surrounded on all sides by a video installation by the artist Pipilotti Rist. Elena is a yoga rock star, her normal classes are packed with beautiful, downtowners, and the MoMA class is exactly the sort of creative mix of body and culture and community that inspires Social Workout. I was crushed to have missed the event, of course, but, surfing around this morning, I discovered the audio podcast. Your living room with laptop or iPod is not the same as at MoMA with 100 or so others, but it might not be a bad solution for a wet, snowy day. Check it: Elena Brower and Pipilotti Rist, Live from the MoMa.
in-whale MoMA YoGA was as fantastic as everyone says! It reminded me of urbansherpa's posts about yoga on a rooftop where all you see is sky. I haven't done yoga on a rooftop, but I have a feeling the two share the same sort of transcendent feeling. Then--really great to be able to finally spend a little time w/ other SWers!
creating space I was not familiar with Elena Brower, Virayoga or even the Anusara practice before YoGA at MoMA on Saturday. Brower's approach was very personable, I really liked the bassist who was accompanying the practice and it was very cool to do yoga in the museum. Maybe I just expected more physical activity and less talking during the hour and a half - who knows. Having said that
a solitary moment in the unity of hundreds Some people go to yoga because they love the poses and deep stretching. For some, its just to see if they can do it. Others even, just because it's trendy. Or maybe because the instructor is beautiful.
YoGA at the MoMA! I had a great time doing yoga at MoMA this morning! Some challenging poses/binding that I hadn't done before, which was good. Elena Brower's assistants were great making adjustments. I was so worried about being late, getting a space, etc. that I totally spaced on looking out for the Social Workout folks. I'm kicking myself. I'm so sorry I missed you guys.
Elena Brower MoMA YoGA podcast thanks Social Workout for pointing me to this great online class.. a nice way to start the day. It's not the most advanced/vigorous, but it does get a burn going in there. It's basically straight up anusara-- sun salutations, triangle, half moon, pigeon, bridge..
