First Shots Fired in Texas Yoga Regulation Battle
Earlier this year, yogis in Virginia triumphed over the state's proposed plan to regulate yoga teacher training. New York yogis won a similar victory. Now the winds of regulation have blown west to Texas, and, no surprise, Texas yogis aren't any more excited about the prospect of state oversight. Here's the gist: Every other vocational education provider in Texas has to be licensed and certified and pay according fees. Somehow, yoga teacher training schools have flown under the radar till now. And the Texas Workforce Commission would like to change that.

Yogis March on Washington D.C.
This morning, yogis upset over a proposed D.C. tax on health club memberships, which would affect yoga studios, got together for some rousing Protest Yoga in Freedom Plaza. An email to recruit yogi protestors announced: "We will be wearing BRIGHT COLORS, doing GUERILLA YOGA, and holding SIGNS with cheeky sayings." Based on this morning's event, guerrilla yoga apparently means yoga close to traffic, and "Money Doesn't Grow on Tree Pose" apparently counts for cheeky in D.C.

Yoga Regulation Battle Ends, Yogis Win
You may recall the panic that swept Virginia-area yogis last summer when the state threatened to regulate yoga teacher training. Under the proposed plan, teacher training programs would have required state certification (just like every other vocational training program) and would have had to pay $2,500 to apply for said certification. Yogis didn't like it. Terms like "overly burdensome" got thrown around a lot. And this week, Virginia's Governor signed a bill exempting yoga teacher training programs from state certification. So maybe cheer! Or maybe worry that there's no state oversight of yoga teachers?
