Walking Makes Your Brain Work Better

Walking does awesome stuff to your brain, a new study shows. In particular, it increases the connections in your brain networks. Researchers used fMRIs to scan the brains of adults who were sedentary before the study but then started a walking program. A year after starting their 40-minutes three-times-a-week walking regimen, the study participants did significantly better on cognitive tests. They also showed significantly elevated connectivity in their "default mode network" (DMN is the network that dominates when you're passively observing or day dreaming) as well as in their fronto-executive network (that's the network that engages for complex tasks). In sum, walking: Good for you legs, heart, brain...pretty much everything.

in search of wild parrots

2.5 hours walking yesterday: 1 hour at lunch and 1.5 hours in search for wild parrots on the Hudson River Greenway with a friend of mine.  She'd spotted the nest the day before and wanted to show somebody just to prove she wasn't seeing things.  She said it was a big nest; she wasn't kidding.  Turns it's not just a bird or two; it's a colony.  We found a video about it this

Average Weight Gain Numbers Bleak, But Bikers' Numbers Much Better

Remember that study we mentioned a few days ago about biking and walking even in small increments being marvelously effective at keeping your weight in check? It's in the news again today, if only because USA Today would like to accentuate the negative, the negative being that the average woman in the 18,000 woman study gained 20 pounds in 16 years. But again, we remind you, it doesn't have to be that way. Focus again on the biking and walking healthy magic part!

Been stressed? Yeah, a bit...

Ups and downs today.

I went in this morning to see another doctor.  My blood pressure was up, as was my RHR at 67 bpm...good results.  We talked about the results from when I had the heart rate monitor strapped to me for 24 hours.  Everything checked out okay.

"Have you been under any stress lately?"

Yes, I have, in fact.

up and down, a hill that is...

so i just ran up and down a hill by my house because i just got home from a late gig and needed to move my body. it was kind of fun and a nice challenge. 27 minutes of huffin' and puffin'. i also ran around the block. I'm trying to incorporate a little more jogging in my walks because walking is getting to be too easy for me now.

Movement Poetry

Why Walk?

A poetic meditation on the why of walking from the mnmlist (via Conditioning Research). Kinda lovely.

the joy of walking

Today I set out from my house and walked. And walked.

I didn’t have a specific destination in mind, but wanted to walk a bit before finding a quiet place to write. So I walked, out of the town where I live and along the tropical, white-sand coastline, to the next town over.

As others drove cocooned in their cars, I walked, and emitted nothing but my breath.

As others spent their lunch hour pounding down fat-laden burgers and greasy fries or some other cheesy fried piled-high dish, I walked, and burned calories.

As others rushed and stressed, I walked, and took my time.

As others sat at their computers, I walked, and got my blood flowing.

As others held power business meetings and made deals, I walked, and had time to think.

As others were productive and got tasks done, I walked and got nothing done, and cleared my head.

guilt ridden walk

i walked every where today. i ran 8.1miles, but i had turned around during yesterday's run so that 8.1 was supposed to be 11miles. i felt guilty all day, for turning around in rain yesterday, like i was made of sugar. so i set out to do all my errands by foot. nothing new, just something wet in the humid temps that languished over us today. so i walked, for an hour and 45 minutes...
