Rachel Doesn't Do Hip-Hop Booty Burn But She's All About Trapeze
Every day, we give you a snapshot of one fellow striver in fitness. We ask personal questions, he or she boldly answers. Today's snapshot: Rachel, aka berlinesque.
- What's your number one workout spot? I'm lucky to have a wonderful workout spot at home – a bright mezzanine space that I've equipped with basic Pilates gear, yoga mat, free weights, swiss ball, sliding discs, therabands, dvds, music, etc., so once I'm up there I have lots of options to choose from, and no excuses....
- What's the healthiest thing you eat? My morning shake: Almond milk, rice protein, chocolate sorbet, frozen banana, a splash of flax oil, and a dash of cinnamon – yum!

Running, TRAPEZE, Walking
I thought it would be a good idea to run / walk to my trapeze class, a total of 4.7 miles door-to-door. And it actually would have been. Except for a few things:

- What's your number one workout spot? Crunch. It's the first gym I ever joined. I used to spend a lot of time at the 59th St location until I ran out of money and couldn't afford my trainer anymore. Now I hang out at Union Square.
- What are you just never going to try? My mom once went to a doctor who put metal balls behind her ears and every few hours she would have to roll them. It was supposed to make her lose weight. I was young and don't remember if it actually worked but I would never, ever try that. I have memories of us sitting in traffic and she's rolling them. Also, any of those cleanse diets. I like food too much.

Julie Ludwick on Hauling Your Own Stuff
Julie Ludwick is the founder and Artistic Director of Fly-by-Night Dance Theater, which specializes in a combination of Modern Dance and Aerial Dance. She also teaches low-flying trapeze, Modern Dance, Improvisation, and Skinner Releasing Technique.
I grew up with ballet, and I became a modern dancer in college. I also grew up in Alaska climbing trees. One of the people I worked with in college was doing a trapeze piece, and I danced in that, and it was just kind of an itch that kept bugging me after that. I think with a lot of people, once they start doing aerial work, they get sort of addicted for all kinds of different reasons. When you stop doing it, you just want to do it again. For me, it was kind of a feminist thing. The role of women in Alaska is like “Carry your own luggage.” If you can’t haul your own stuff, you don't get to come. Using trapeze, you don't need a guy as your partner. Similarly, the man doesn’t need the woman. It’s an independence thing.

Courtney Just Wants to Run and Flip

- What's your number one workout spot? New York Sports Club at 91st & 3rd.
- What's the healthiest thing you eat? Bananas.
- What's your secret (fitness-related) sin? I completely ignore the whole concept of cross-training. There are only two kinds of work-outs I do: running and trapeze. I run for the cardio benefits (and because I am becoming addicted), and I do trapeze because it is amazingly fun and way less harmful to my body than gymnastics (which I used to do). I am fully aware I should throw in some classes, or elliptical, or stair climber, or something. But I really just want to run or flip.

Bobby Hedglin-Taylor on Dancing 30 Feet Off the Ground
Bobby Hedglin-Taylor is an aerialist and the Director of The España Streb Trapeze Academy in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
I started as a dancer, and I’ll probably die dancing. I was a ballroom dancer in the early 80s. That led to theater and dance and so many other artistic endeavors. What led me to cirucs, I was living in L.A. and doing some TV work and not making a lot of money, and I came back to New York to do a voiceover for "The Circus Adventures of Toby Tyler." I was Toby Tyler. It was based on an old book from the early 1900s. They hired a circus trainer to train me because they wanted to do a live version of the show. Eventually the funding fell through, but I’d already fallen in love with circus. So I kept working with the trainer, and six months later, I was performing.

Amy Lee Needs to Eat or She Gets Bitchy

- What's your number one workout spot? I'm a member of New York Sports Club, so I hit whichever location I happen to be closest to at the moment. The gym closest to my day job (44th and 5th) sees me most frequently, though I also spend a lot of time over at Bikram Yoga Harlem. I love this studio - the folks who run it are great, and there's just a warm feeling of community that has nothing to do with the thermostat.
- What's your secret sin? Ah, but if I told you it wouldn't be a secret, would it?
- What are you just never going to try? You will likely never see me in trapeze class and you won't find me doing a liquids-only cleanse. I've got an auto-immune disease. Also, I need to eat or I get bitchy.
