The Obama's Snack Bars Will Torpedo Your Diet
The New York Times has done a little analysis of the "healthy" fruit and oat snack bars the Obamas have been serving at the White House. Yeah, not so healthy. Well, healthy in terms of being packed with almonds and cashews for protein, but a little troubling in the calorie department: A 9-by-13-inch pan of the bars contained at least 3,350 calories. Cut them into small pieces (24 slices per pan) and they have 143 calories per serving, which isn't horrible but which is more than a chocolate chip cookie. But the real trouble, the Times says, is they're so good you can't stop eating them. Dangerous recipe after the jump.

Sore Muscles? Try Ginger
In a recent study, researchers at the University of Georgia showed that ginger consumption can cut exercise-induced pain by 25 percent. In the study, they plied subjects with either raw ginger, cooked ginger, or a placebo for 11 straight days. On the 8th day, they made the people do hard weight lifting that "induced moderate muscle injury." Then they assessed their pain over the next three days. The ginger-eaters: Way less pain. A few of our favorite ginger recipes after the jump.

Salsa and Guacamole Are Out To Get You
The Center for Disease Control just gave salsa and guacamole their own acronym: SGA, which stands for salsa-and-guacamole associated, and the acronym was necessary because there were so many salsa-and-guacamole cases of food poisoning that it got tiresome to write the whole thing out over and over. So SGA. FYI, one reason SGA cases are so common is because salsa and gauc get whipped up in big batches, and your little bowl of salsa comes from the big bowl, which has been sitting around for a while. Solution, give up salsa a guacamole. Just kidding! Make your own! A few of your favorite recipes, after the jump.
More...ZUKE ALLORS!
Thank goodness Texas has a long growing season. I planted early, and I have squash, basil, and cilantro coming out my ears. Peppers, eggplant, cucumbers, and green beans are not far behind. I say thank goodness because I will be gone from mid-May to late July, and there should still be some goodies when I get back.

30 minute run, powered by the Black Keys. I love being plugged again!
I have to work today but my husband is off, so I'm meeting him at an Indian restaurant for a long lunch date. I was excited about that bright spot in my day when preparing my breakfast this morning, so my oats were inspired by Indian rice pudding.

Citrus Salad
Just sharing a breakfast I'm loving right now...
Mix tangerines, oranges, and grapefruit; drizzle with a little orange blossom honey; top with greek yogurt...I just found full fat greek yogurt for the first time and it rounds out this salad perfectly.
Enjoy! That citrus comes in season halfway through winter is a beacon in the night.
