Man-Approved Healthy Super Bowl Guide

The Superbowl has always been near and dear to me—especially since I was working the stage in Houston during the most historical boob moment in the known universe—but it usually entails eating crap and getting hammered and the next day (hung over) discussing your favorite commercials with your coworkers gathered around the water cooler. I’m not against that at all, especially since crowds of people will be hollering WHO DAT after every black-and-gold major play. Eat. Drink. Be Merry. But, as an advocate for health, I’ve perused the Internet and selected a few alternatives to plates of pasta, fried wings, and Jager shots after team TDs.

Spinach Makes You A Better Lover

In his V-Day column, the Diet Detective, aka Charles Stuart Platkin, MPH, PhD, points out that spinach is loaded with magnesium, which relaxes muscles and soothes nerves, "making us feel more open and receptive." In case you're not catching his drift, "open and receptive" means sexy. Maybe eating handfuls of spinach out of the bag isn't a turn on, but try one of our slightly more creative ideas for using lovely, leafy spinach and see where it takes you.

Chocolate Cherry Workout Recovery Treats

What you eat after your workout can either prolong or kill the positive effects of your exercise. When we spoke with nutritionist Keri Glassman last week, she recommended a post workout snack chock full of antioxidant-rich cherries. This recipe for Chocolate-Cherry Buttermilk Scones, from her new book the O2 Diet, sounds decadent, but Keri swears it's good for you.

Bad Decisions and Low Blood Sugar Go Hand in Hand

Your blood sugar affects your decision making ability, says a new study. Sounds like a total duh to the legions of us who get grouchy and sullen when we're hungry, but it's more nuanced than that. When your blood sugar is high, you're better at delaying gratification and choosing options with long term rewards. When your blood sugar is low you want what you want when you want it and you're more likely trade higher long range pay-offs for lesser but immediate rewards. One way to read this study is that you should consume lots of Jolly Ranchers before every big life decision. But probably the more reasonable interpretation is that you should keep your brain humming at all times with blood-sugar-sustaining foods like doctored-up oatmeal or high-protein yogurt. Though Jolly Ranchers are delicious...

Post-Yoga Recovery Smoothie

Triathletes need recovery food, but guess what? So do yogis. Stan Woodman and Gina Norman, co-owners of Greenwich Yoga, have been working to design the fastest yoga recovery food around, and here's their best find to date: The "Asana" smoothie, made with sugar-free electrolytes, inflammation reducing flax oil, easily digestible and absorbable hemp protein, and a shot of vitamins, antioxidants, and potassium. They make it in the Kaia Café and Juice Bar at Greenwich Yoga, but you can make it at home. Recipe after the jump.

Sate Your Sweet Tooth Without Sugar

So let's say you're conquering the New Year's Edition Challenge's Sugar-Free Feat. Admittedly, what's really hard for most people is not giving up dessert, it's ferreting out all the added sugar in things like soup and cold cereal. But let's say you're not most people. Let's say you're me, and you really really love dessert. You could go all artificial with sugar-free Jell-O and Cool Whip, and although I'll admit I was born and raised on that stuff and find it absolutely delicious, it's not exactly natural and maybe not even technically food. So let's cross that off. What are you left with? Turns out the answer is tons of crazy delicious recipes. Like chocolate beet cake. That and three other favorites after the jump....

Black eyed peas w/collards and apples

Another healthy dinner to share...

Boil collards and black eyed peas in separate pots (should only take 20 minutes each if the beans have been pre-soaked). You'll need about two cups each.

Saute one shallot, three garlic cloves, and 1 1/2 apples (I used fuji and pink lady) in olive oil over medium heat. Add a sprinkle of cinnamon and red pepper flakes.
