Emily Wishes She Were a Lady GaGa Backup Dancer

Every day, we give you a snapshot of one fellow striver in fitness. We ask personal questions, they boldly answer. Today's snapshot: Emily, aka moveyourbootyblog.

  • What's your secret (fitness-related) sin? Sometimes (as my running partner can attest) I wear the same workout clothes a couple times in a row —what, they're just going to get sweaty again! Am I right?!
  •  What's your number one workout spot? The Brooklyn Bridge and I had a pretty good thing going for a while. But then I moved (it was an amicable split). These days, when I'm not sweating it out in Core Fusion over at the Soho Exhale location or getting my namaste on at Laughing Lotus, I've been really into morning runs on the Williamsburg bridge (but please don't tell the Brooklyn Bridge, I don't want to make it awkward).

Tumbling for Yogis

A handstand is cool, but a handstand into a somersault is something else altogether. Ah, to tumble, to fly, to play out there beyond the confines of, say, downard dog.... Here's your chance: This Saturday from 3PM to 6PM, Laughing Lotus will host a Handstands and Tumbling workshop taught by Sarah East Johnston, founder of LAVA, a Brooklyn-based acrobatic, dance theater group. Just $30, and you might end up in a human pyramid. Possible strategy: Take Laughing Lotus' one hour "Flower Hour" class at 1PM, nap for an hour, then start tumbling. If you like it, your next step will be to sign up for a semester of tumbling at the LAVA Studio in Brooklyn. See video of LAVA in action after the jump....

Laughing Lotus Road Trips to the Big Easy

  • Who: Laughing Lotus Co-Director Dana Flynn and instructors Sean, Gwendolyn, and Alison join forces with Wild Lotus Yoga of New Orleans.
  • What: A weekend of Kirtan, chanting, singing, and yoga. The chanting and rhythm sessions outweigh the yoga sessions, so if Kirtan's your thing, this weekend's for you. Housing isn't provided, but they'll hook you up with a local yogis if you're amenable to couch surfing. Otherwise, you're on your own.
  • Where: New Orleans. Classes held at Wild Lotus Yoga, in Audobon Park, and elsewhere out and about.
  • When: Easter Weekend, Friday, April 2 - Sunday April 4, 2010.
  • Why: If you haven't made it back to Nola since Katrina, this is an affordable, healthy, and karmically promising way to make the visit. Dana, the Co-Director of Laughing Lotus, is a force, and music is an anti-depressant. At least one white dude playing the sitar guaranteed.
  • How Much: $108
  • Link: Big Soak Nola.

Yoga Studios

Laughing Lotus Is A Sparkly Pink Yoga Palace

Laughing Lotus is one of the city's major teaching studios, and you can feel it. The vibe is friendly, but also a little clubby. As if half the people know each other. Cause, actually, they do. It's also a bit more girlie than other studios.

Emergency Pre-Thanksgiving Yoga Retreat In Zihuatanejo

  • Who: Rachel Meyer Welch of Sukha Yoga Collective on 25th Street (Lululemon's "New York Studio of the Month" in October.)
  • What: Super high-end "yoga vacation." Two hour yoga class in the morning, followed by organic breakfast. In the afternoon take pilates, walk on the beach, or learn to salsa dance.
  • Where: The Tides Hotel, Zihuatanejo (which Travel + Leisure  placed on its "500 List" of top hotels.)
  • When: Um, like ONE WEEK from today. November 9-15th
  • Why: You've got an unexpected break. You need to fully center yourself before the family Thanksgiving. Retreats don't always have to be about grungy and trendy eco-chic palapas. The Tides is a five star hotel, and Rachel is a real-deal teacher, certified at Laughing Lotus. Just crazy enough to be a good idea....
  • How much: $2800 (not including airfare)
