The Hamptons Falls For Paddle Yoga

Today's New York Times tries to define the essence of the Hamptons this summer. Some years, the essence of the Hamptons is Lizzie Grubman backing her SUV into a crowd outside a nightclub. This year, apparently, the essence of the Hamptons is stand-up pabbleboarding + yoga + s'mores:

Buns of Steal

Gymhopping in the Hamptons

Today's free workout: Core Dynamics Health & Fitness. Day 2 of the Hamptons. Wake up deliriously hot. Step gingerly around the many men, in various stages of undress, hangover, and general disarray, sprawled on every surface in the 3 bedroom house. Flee to Starbucks where both wireless and AC reign, with friends J and Jay in tow. Scour the internet for nearby gyms offering free passes. This isn't nearly as easy as in NYC, or even in DC — apparently the Hamptons are too fancy for handouts. But at last, bingo! Free pass and a class called Tabata Time staring in 45 minutes.

We rush home and J and I throw on clothes... Jay only has one outfit with him, and its a polo shirt and cargo shorts. But, he totally mans up and says he'll work out with us, polo shirt and all. We arrive just in time, and pile, huffing and puffing, into the Tabata room. I'll get to what Tabata is in a minute, but first, it must be noted: The women in this class were seriously unbelievable.

Ayurvedic Fall Cleanse at Tapovana Healing Center

You know how sometimes you want to do a cleanse but then you end up eating nothing more than sugary juice and boiled greens and suddenly you're more bloated than ever? Precisely the reason why you should check out Corey De Rosa's ayurvedic cleansing info session taking place at Tapovana  in Sag Harbor this weekend. I don't know very much about Ayurveda, but I know Corey (he's an amazing Ashtangi and vey cool guy to boot), and I trust that any event taking place at his yoga studio is a reliable one. If you're in the area (or not), I reccommend checking it out, (deets after the jump). You'll learn soothing massage techniques, how to assess your doshas, a.k.a. overall imbalances, how to establish healthy eating after the cleanse, and instructions for rejuvenation therapy. It also includes in-person and email support or follow-up consultation....

Summer's Over, But Yoga Lives On In Sag Harbor

September is the new August, and here's a hot tip for East End yogis: Tapovana, beloved Sag Harbor yoga studio, has moved to a new location behind the American Hotel, and is celebrating the change of address this Friday evening with a "pooja" (blessing ceremony), followed by "prasad" (ceremonial food), and a live performance of classical Indian music by Dee Harris.

In case you're out of the loop, Tapovana is a far more zen spot than Sag Harbor's extremely popular studio, Yoga Shanti, which is owned by yogalebrities Colleen Saidman and Rodney Yee. (He's Donna Karan's private teacher; their wedding was featured in the New York Times). Unlike Yoga Shanti, at which one can encounter Manhattan-style mat rage, Tapovana is serene and rarely crowded. It has the most traditional Indian vibe of any yoga studio in the Hamptons, and they have a great early morning Mysore ashtanga class taught by owner Corey De Rosa and Stacey Platt, both of whom are very nice and offer a ton of personal attention. Don't give up on summer just yet....

Celebrity News

Baldwin, Brooke, and Bon Jovi Spinning in the Hamptons

Friday of Labor Day weekend, and it's time to check in once again on the intense Hamptons spinning scene. Always interesting to see which celebs have that masochistic spinning gene. Well, my people report spotting Alec Baldwin, Aerin Lauder, Sean Avery, John Bon Jovi and SNL producer Marci Klein pumping away at Ride the Zone in East Hampton, while Tory Burch and Brooke Shields hang out at SoulCycle in Bridgehampton. Oh, to be in spin class with Baldwin! All that pent up aggression. And Bon Jovi? Amazing the man has still got it in him! No word yet on A-listers at upstart studio (B)East, but, despite all the drama, we've been hearing good things from the Amagansett crowd.

Bonjovi sings while he spins

This morning I took Marion's 9am ride in EH. She had us climb for 40 minutes and recover on the sprint. After class we ran upstairs to take the rest of Stephen's 9:30. We jumped on our bikes, quick to catch the beat and take off. With a quick glance across the studio, I notice Bonjovi singing along to the tunes while he is riding.

Workout

Sunday Wakey Wakey

My eyes were still closed when class began, though I had long since climbed out of bed, and sat in car for 15 minutes, en route to Kama Deva. Didn't think it likely, but felt not just awake but much more alive post class. First trip to KamaDeve, which is small, and just a single door in anonymous two story suburban-style office building; BUT remarkably charming.

Ride the Zone Opens Studio in Southampton

Marion, Ride the Zone founder, emails to say their Southampton studio will open this weekend: "We are still putting on the finishing touches but that is not going to stop us from having an AMAZING MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND IN OUR BRAND NEW STUDIO!!!" Woman has energy. File under proof that the Hamptons summer season is set for lift-off, and with an increasing number of more typically urban workout options.

Memorial Day Workout in East Hampton

It's Sunday of Memorial Day weekend, you're hungover and staring down the muzzle of a three hour drive. In traffic. Possibly smart move: One of our fave trainers, Sara Dimmick, is hosting a free one hour workout this Sunday at Lululemon's East Hampton outpost. Yes, in case you care and missed it, Lulu opened at 35 Main Street in E.H. last summer, across from the movie theater. (The yogis took over from a real estate agency, which took over from Banana Republic, which, we think, took over from the News Co. Moral: Get out of newspapers and real estate, and into national yoga brands.)

But moving right along: If you're not planning to work out on Main Street in East Hampton this weekend, but you are looking for a new workout, you might catch up with Sara in June at one of her boot camps in either Central Park or Prospect Park. You'd be surprised how effective park benches, steps, hills and lawns are as workout props.
