Earth Day Yoga at The Standard: New York Goes Peace, Love and Miami

Post game report on the Earth Day celebration at The Standard, produced by our friends at Flavorpill: Note the wood-paneled "Highline Room" above, with picture window looking out at sun setting over New Jersey. That's Elena Brower of Virayoga fame at the front, talking about the the Hindu goddess Kali. After deep savasana, a crowd of conga drummers files in with deejay. Ensued: Yogis dancing barefoot, drinking coconut water, and eating organic chocolate. Meanwhile, downstairs in the biergarten, well-dressed financiers drink wheat beer and eye the various Ferraris left casually at the curb. Can The Standard re-create the success of its Miami hamam in the Meapa? Consensus: It'll be tough, but the healthy living part would be nice. Overheard by the coconut water bar, a NYC yogi talking to an Exec from The Standard Miami....

NYC Yogi: New York has great yoga.
Standard Exec: But Miami has the love.

Get Your Dance On at YogaWorks this Saturday

UPDATE MARCH 2011: Get Your Dance On is bigger than ever, and you can get the latest scoop on their Kickstarter page.

Flavorpill's Get Your Dance On is moving to Manhattan! Dress to sweat and show up at YogaWorks Soho for three hours of music, wine, chocolate, kombucha, and, of course, dancing, this Saturday from 7 - 10 pm. The cost for the night is $20, but it gets you a free week of yoga at YogaWorks and all proceeds benefit Housing Works. (YogaWorks members, cost is $10). The party kicks off right after the last savasana of the day, so if you're feeling über-fit, come for yoga, stay for dancing. As our friends at Flavorpill put it, "GYDO is all ages, all styles, all backgrounds, and all love." Dress to sweat. Tickets at the door or by calling Yogaworks at (212) 965-0801.

Social Workout Goes to Yoga at the MoMa

move with me as one
freedom in space and in time
stillness of the mind

Tomorrow at 8:30AM, under Gabriel Orozco's Mobile Matrix, in the vast main room of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, 250 yogis will salute the sun — and then go on to take a yoga class.  Among them will be a number of Social Workout readers (and editors...), at least four of whom composed a Haiku for the privilege. Congrats to daisylb, whose haiku is above, as well as sandyliz, zuzupetals, and mindy b; and thank you all for your poems. This is the third yoga-meets-art event produced by Flavorpill, and I confess it makes me happy. It's a brilliant, fresh mixing of fine art, body culture and urban community. Wish you could join? Well, we've got one slot left to give away....

Get Your Dance On at the Brooklyn Bowl

Recipe for idyllic Saturday morning and way to achieve your Historic Dancing feat: Get Your Dance On kicks off this Saturday at the mad popular Brooklyn Bowl at 10:30 A.M. Yes, it's a weekly morning dance party produced by our friends at Flavorpill. Wake up. Proceed to the Bowl. Dance for an hour or two to DJ Small ¢hange, who spins Jamaican dub by way of Burning Man funk. Brunch on a full menu of comfort food provided by the Blue Ribbon Bakery kitchen. Dance some more, and then perhaps bowl a few frames. It's daytime dancing, and it's open to all ages. Who knows if it'll be the perfect urban mix of dance-loving young and old in a bowling alley context, or a romper room? But it seems just crazy enough to be brilliant.

Practical Eating

Sascha's Smoothie

Flavorpill co-founder Sascha Lewis, the picture of extreme wellness, popped by our kitchen with a mission: To make a smoothie that tastes good AND would help him gain a few pounds. A few whirls, chops, plops, dabs and spoonfuls later, the strangest looking concoction emerged: A greenish-greyish drink with a pudding-like consistency. It's peanut butter, he explained, dabbing at his chartreuse moustache — and avocado, plus maca , and a banana, and coconut milk. The good fats of the avocado and coconut mixed with the dense, calorific peanut butter, plus all the iron and minerals in the maca (a.k.a. "nature's Viagra), actually made the thing as healthy as it looked. And it tasted good, we all agreed: Fortifying and delicious. Here's how you can make it, too....
