Earth Day Yoga at The Standard: New York Goes Peace, Love and Miami

Post game report on the Earth Day celebration at The Standard, produced by our friends at Flavorpill: Note the wood-paneled "Highline Room" above, with picture window looking out at sun setting over New Jersey. That's Elena Brower of Virayoga fame at the front, talking about the the Hindu goddess Kali. After deep savasana, a crowd of conga drummers files in with deejay. Ensued: Yogis dancing barefoot, drinking coconut water, and eating organic chocolate. Meanwhile, downstairs in the biergarten, well-dressed financiers drink wheat beer and eye the various Ferraris left casually at the curb. Can The Standard re-create the success of its Miami hamam in the Meapa? Consensus: It'll be tough, but the healthy living part would be nice. Overheard by the coconut water bar, a NYC yogi talking to an Exec from The Standard Miami....

NYC Yogi: New York has great yoga.
Standard Exec: But Miami has the love.

Hot Tickets: Wanderlust Previews and Eddie Stern at the Urban Zen Foundation

It's rainy in New York — maybe also where you are? — and  we all wish we were partying like rock stars in Austin at South by Southwest. Whatevs. New York yogis have at least two promising events to look forward to....

Starting this Wednesday evening, Eddie Stern will teach a weekly, led Astanga yoga class at Donna Karan's Urban Zen Center. Who's Eddie, and so what? Oh, grasshopper. In New York, Eddie is perhaps the staunchest keeper of the Ashtanga yoga flame, the designated representative of Ashtanga's founder, the late Sri Pattabhi Jois. Full cultural significance detailed after the jump, but suffice to say this is opening Wednesday, and it should be an interesting scene. Price of admission $20.

Separate and unrelated: On Saturday, the Wanderlust crowd (please recall the annual Yoga Rock Festival in Lake Tahoe) are hosting a pre-festival, momentum gathering bash at Kula Yoga Project. Two hours of "tag team vinyasa classes" with the ever-popular Elena Brower and Schuyler Grant, among others, backed by a crowd of yogi musicians. Naturally, class will be followed by a game of late night Extreme Twister. It's kind of pricey at $40, but can you really price late night Extreme Twister? Also, you get in free if you buy a Wanderlust ticket, and some of the proceeds go to cool charities.

My Two Weeks With YogaEarth, Supplement to the Stars

Nutritional supplements aren't generally my bag. Usually, I steer clear of them because I don't understand the ingredients, and I'm not sure I want to look like Macho Man Randy Savage. I decided, however, to take the plunge with YogaEarth, a supplement for, you guessed it, yogis. The good folks at YogaEarth make a fairly big todo about the fact that their products are organic, holistic, and made from fantabulous ingredients. And they're backed by some pretty well-to-do Yogis like Sara Ivanhoe, Kristin McGee, and Elena Brower. I own their DVDs! So I was actually pretty psyched to add these suckers to my practice. Here's the lowdown.

Snapshot

All Elizabeth Wants is a Yoga Top That Stays Put During Inversions

Every day, we give you a snapshot of one fellow striver in fitness. We ask personal questions, they boldly answer. Today's snapshot: Elizabeth, aka joesgirl.

  • What's your number one workout spot? Virayoga in Soho. I've been a member of the kula (sanskrit for "community of the heart") at Vira for years. It is the best yoga studio in New York, in my opinion, and not just because it is a wonderful place to practice — some of my closest friends in life are people who I've met there over the years. It just seems to attract the most wonderful souls. Equinox, to which I have an all-access membership through work, is a distant second. I will candidly admit that there are times when I have routinely used Equinox for nothing more than access to the steamroom (LOL). In recent years, however, and as I get older, it's become more obvious to me that a little additional cardio and weight training doesn't hurt a person. So, I'm now also exploring spinning and various other brutal experiences at a variety of the downtown/Brooklyn-based Equinoxes (Equini?)
