The Sting and Trudie Show

Sting and his wife Trudie Styler are suddenly everywhere. Last week they celebrated the 200th birthday of Robert Schumann by reading the composer's correspondence with his also-a-brilliant-composer wife, Clara Wieck Schumann, accompanied by a six person classical ensemble. THIS week they've given an EXCLUSIVE joint interview to Yoga Journal in which they say they meditate and do lot's of yoga. This interview may have something to do with the fact that Trudie has just released a new yoga DVD, with Sting providing musical backing. Rad! (Seeking reviewers....) If you were hoping for salacious tidbits about their sex life in this interview, calm down. Here's the hottest part....

<3 Jillian

In an attempt to spread my minutes over a wider range of categories, I decided to stay home from the gym yesterday and do a workout dvd instead. I selected Jillian's No More Trouble Zones, which I hadn't done since last summer and of which I had almost no memory.

Fitness from the Far East

I first turned to belly dancing to mend a broken heart. This actually had a counterproductive effect — after class I would feel all sexy and hip-rolley and realize I had no one at home to try out my awesome moves on.  Eventually with time and a rebound or two my sorrow dissipated, but my love of belly dance, and later Bollywood and Bhangra, stayed strong. Since classes are expensive, I've learned to nurture my Belly/Bolly/Bhangra dance love through technology. Here, a list of my favorite Far East Fitness DVDs:

Yoga It Girl Elena Brower on Yoga DVDs and Finding Your Teacher

I've known Elena Brower for a while now, she just hasn't known me. She makes an appearance on my TV a couple of times a week. (Elena hosts a series of yoga DVDs for Element, and is the streaming video go-to girl for yoga. She can be seen teaching full length Anusara classes for YogaGlo and free 10-minute yoga segments for Adidas). After all these years, I figured it was time that I actually venture to her SoHo yoga studio Virayoga to experience the real deal.

After Elena opened the minds and bodies of 60+ students in class Saturday morning (which she taught straight from her MoMA Yoga Under the Whale class), she opened up about her own life and thoughts about yoga.

Jane Fonda Fitness is Back

Jane Fonda, now 72, is filming a new fitness DVD. Production begins mid-March, and Ms. Fonda says she's aiming to "target an audience that has been left out, my age group and the boomers." So what if I'm a few decades from the target demo. I'm totally going to buy the DVD anyway. Now if only John Travolta and Jamie Lee Curtis would team up for a new DVD...

sad little pilates workout

I did Pilates Conditiong for Weight Loss, a Gaiam DVD with Suzanne Deason. It's pretty wussy, and while I feel stretched and open, I don't feel like I got a workout at all. But it took up 45 minutes of my life so I'm counting it as a workout! At least I moved my body.

Any suggestions for a good pilates DVD?

Ellen Barrett's Fusion Flow!

First time with this DVD--and I enjoyed it thoroughly!  Some difficult moves, and felt completely stretched out when finished.

Sexy Voices

Denise Austin Makes Over Your Body with Her Voice

My 2010 inaugural workout was Denise Austin's new Body Makeover Mix. Austin is exactly twice my age, still in Barbie doll condition, and has literally hundreds of workout videos to her name. In short, she would seem a solid year opener. First impression: When she finally hangs up her spandex, Denise Austin needs to consider a second career doing voice overs for steamy imported films, and/or paid phone services. Move over Lauren Bacall. What a voice.

Now then, Body Makeover Mix is compiled of three 45-minute workouts: Upper Body, Lower Body, and Abs. This isn't a hard workout, but it's well rounded, and perfect for those just starting, or anyone feeling a bit mellow, and/or lazy. Gory details after the jump, but here's one tip: My favorite Denise Austin exercise are her Renegade Rows. To do a Renegade Row, you assume  your normal soul crushing, plank position, and then lift up one hand at time to the corresponding shoulder, holding onto a weight. Normally these are done with kettlebells, but Denise does them with her itty-bitty three pounders, which is actually quite pleasant. Both she and the Internets promise that Renegade Rows will give you a "rock hard" tummy....

New Yoga DVD and Naughty Flogging, Day 25

Finally cracked open a dvd my mom gifted to me a while back - Baron Baptiste Soul of Strength. I was inspired to try it out after she demonstrated some poses brilliantly today. I know this isn't a yogic thing to say but I was jealous! One uncoordinated and inflexible practice under my belt...

Flog: Big slice of german chocolate cake and an extra buttered potato roll (mmm...)
