Deal Alert

Free Classes at Pure Yoga This Week

This week, Pure Yoga turns two, and to celebrate they're offering complimentary classes (though only one class per person, so you can't go totally nuts). Multiple classes available for the offer every day this week. But the most fun way to take advantage of the deal would be the Rock Your Chakras Anniversary Class, this Wednesday at 6:30 P.M. Live music courtesy of Derek Beres and EarthRise Sound System, plus organic wine, treats, and prizes. As a further bit of celebration, Pure has dropped their usual initiation fee to $2 this week, which is a better deal than the other supposedly fabulous deals they sometimes offer.

New York City Yoga Weekend Planner

Spring is in the air, and the season of nutty outdoor yoga events is approaching. Yogis long to be feral. Meantime, there's the regular drumbeat of indoor yoga workshops, kirtan jams, and meditation fests happening all over the place. San Francisco yogi Dina Amsterdam emailed to tell us she'll be making a tour through New York this weekend to teach her popular "Pure Yin" classes at Om Factory and Yogaworks Soho. Not to be missed. This prompted us to round up all of the other potentially life-changing yogic things going on this weekend, which you can browse after the jump....

Jivamukti Does Yoga for Haiti's Animals

Jivamukti joins the relief effort for Haiti this Sunday, offering a full court press of morning classes taught by some of the school's standout teachers, including Dechen Thurman and Ruth Lauer-Manenti. The required donation is $75. In a particularly Jivamukti twist, some, if not all, of the proceeds will go to help rescue animals affected by the earthquake. This may or may not be your first priority, but no doubt the need is real. Musical accompaniment will be provided Kelly Britton, Jiva-bred creator of the "rock and roll, gospel, punk" genre. Also this weekend at Jivamukti: EarthRise SoundSystem  will be playing Sandhi Ferreira's 6:15 p.m. class at Jivamukti this Friday night. Check out Duke Mushroom in person. RSVP required.

My Body

David "Duke Mushroom" Schommer on Rhythm and Goji Berries

David "Duke Mushroom" Schommer is a musician and producer, and one half of the duo EarthRise Sound System, whose new album "The Yoga Sessions" hit shelves in January.

Everything in my life is based on rhythm. There's a rhythm to everything. To our heartbeats and the way we walk and the ebb and flow of traffic up 5th avenue. When I first came to New York, I was in a show called Stomp, and that was all about rhythm. Yoga came into my life while I was in Stomp. I was dating this amazing modern dancer who was like, "You know what would be really good for you? If you did a sun salutations every morning." I still do those to this day. That’s the oil for my body and soul!

Derek Beres Complex Series

Walking in an older man asked if the class was beginner or advanced. I said, it was Intermediate/Advanced, but not to worry, he'd be fine. Middway through I was regretting that advice. Derek did a complicated series, involving lot's of unusual hip openers, crows, transitions from upside down warrior (or whatever) to side plank to side plank with elevated leg to eagle....

Cooler Yoga Music: "The Yoga Sessions"

What makes good yoga music? Sitar? Chanting? The kirtan crowd leans that way, and they seem to be having a marvelous time. But Yoga Organix begs to differ. Yoga instructor Derek Beres has a following at Equinox, but he also has a following as DJ and music journalist, and now YogaOrganix is putting out his first yoga music album. Together he and David "Duke Mushroom" Schommer are EarthRise Sound System, and they describe their new album, "The Yoga Sessions," as "percussively rich" and "dubby." Set for a 1/1/2010 release, the tracks are apparently intended to be as good in a club as they are in a yoga class. So if you could use a little break from Bhagavan Das (not that you don't love him!) consider slipping "The Yoga Sessions" to your yoga teacher as a little New Year's present.

Derek Beres Redux...

This time he focused on balance poses. Lot's of moving from high lunge into warrior three into half moon back into high lunge. He spoke again, but don't recall exactly what, but it was fine. After, I stood in the steam room and felt light headed.

Wednesday Night Heavy Breathing

Ripped myself away from desk at 7:27 for 7:30 yoga with Derek Beres around the corner. Crowded, but found a mat. And I was impressed. He spoke about getting back from Budapest, and seeing the amazing baths there. (10,000 people on a Wednesday night. Multiple giant baths. This is what these Hungarians do! How nice.) He did not "umm" or "ahh," nor was he apologetic or preachy.
