Heartrate Spy

Is Nothing Sacred?

Fear: (noun) a distressing emotion aroused by impending danger, evil, pain, etc., or a motivating factor that forces this blogger to run faster and lift heavy objects. Second definition powered me through Brooklyn Bridge Bootcamp class last week. Not only is it the hardest class in the history of classes, but my session's instructor, Roy, kind of looks like Billy Bob Thornton, and when Billy Bob tells you to squat, you squat dammit! Billy Bob and I had a special bond, and I'm not talking about the fact that I saw him have sex with Halle Berry that one time — dude had a direct line to my heart rate.

Let me clarify: Roy and I were both wearing heart rate monitors, and Roy's watch was super perceptive and totally picked up my heart rate. It's a whole new form of eavesdropping.

Buns of Steal

Brooklyn Bootcamp and Suicides

Back when this gem was being written about my gym visiting habit, I met a cool photographer. Robert was tasked with shooting me at Five Points Academy where I was busy failing at Muay Thai kickboxing.  After the class, Robert contacted me and said that he was also a "fitness enthusiast" and would love to do a bootcamp class with me. Fitness enthusiast is a bit of an understatement. Robert is an avid cyclist and his abs look like this at 43. Is that even remotely fair?

Anyway, I arrange to meet Rob at a cafe outside Prospect Park on a Sunday morning, and I find him on the appointed day (after 90 minute weekend subway odyssey) at Connecticut Muffin, shooting the breeze with fellow fit cyclists.

"Kick his butt!" yells one of his buddies as we jog towards the park. I smile bemused, certain that my butt will be the one getting kicked.

Donation-Based Dharma Yoga Opens in Park Slope

Here's a promising equation: Brooklyn + donation-based yoga + Dharma Mittra. Thanks to Brooklyn Based (by way of Llaves) for the tipoff that Dharma Yoga Brooklyn will open in Park Slope this Saturday. For those not in the loop, donation-based yoga is hottish at the moment thanks to the success of places like Yoga to the People. Meanwhile, Dharma Mittra has been hot for 25 years. At 70, the man still puts most 30-nothing yogis to shame. He's the dude on the famous poster "Master Chart of 908 Postures," and his tiny studio on Gramercy attracts a hardcore crowd. (If you're not hitting handstand when you jump back to chataranga, you're in the minority.) The new studio will be run by Dharma Mittra's students, Lily Cushmen and Jeremy Frindel. Park Slopers should expect a tough, authentic pratice — likely more rigorous than YTTP. They should also expect to feel just right about the price. Grand Opening this Saturday with lots of fun yogi activiities, like a full day of chanting and a silent auction.

Workout

All kinds of naughty foods are rumbling around in my tummy. Thanks, SWD Partiers in BK!

Because CJ did a dessert ban I decided on a food ban, and failed. Then I went to the SW Delinquency party and ate so much dessert I had to induce vomiting...waaaayyy too many calories. OK I am sooooo kidding. The point I am making is that CJ is HILARIOUS and I am kind of inappropriate.
