Earth Day Yoga at The Standard: New York Goes Peace, Love and Miami
Post game report on the Earth Day celebration at The Standard, produced by our friends at Flavorpill: Note the wood-paneled "Highline Room" above, with picture window looking out at sun setting over New Jersey. That's Elena Brower of Virayoga fame at the front, talking about the the Hindu goddess Kali. After deep savasana, a crowd of conga drummers files in with deejay. Ensued: Yogis dancing barefoot, drinking coconut water, and eating organic chocolate. Meanwhile, downstairs in the biergarten, well-dressed financiers drink wheat beer and eye the various Ferraris left casually at the curb. Can The Standard re-create the success of its Miami hamam in the Meapa? Consensus: It'll be tough, but the healthy living part would be nice. Overheard by the coconut water bar, a NYC yogi talking to an Exec from The Standard Miami....
NYC Yogi: New York has great yoga.
Standard Exec: But Miami has the love.

Flavorpill's Earth Day Yoga Party at the Standard
We know that you've been meaning to get to the Standard for yoga class since our news about public daily yoga classes on the 18th floor. Well, this Thursday is the day to go. The Standard and our friends at Flavorpill are teaming up to bring you Earth Day Yoga with Elena Brower of Virayoga. Cost is $20, but all proceeds go to EarthDay-NY, and after the 7 P.M. class, the party heats up with live music and free wine, chocolate, and kombucha. All the details after the jump.

Thursday Evening Yoga in the Boom Boom Room
As all the New York glitterati know, the "toughest door" in New York at the moment is on the 18th Floor of The Standard Hotel, an alluring, two story golden chamber with carousel-like chandelier. Impossible to get in unless you happen to be Barry Diller or Russell Simmons, or have recently been on the cover of a major women's fashion magazine. That is, unless you're into yoga and have a spare $20. In an attempt to recreate — in some NYC-appropriate way — the ambiance of their Hamam in Miami, the André Balazs gang now offers yoga daily to all comers at The Standard New York. And, at least some of the time, class goes down on the normally impenetrable 18th floor. No, not exactly IN the Boom Boom, BUT immediately next door in an equally decadent space, featuring mega hot tub, sweeping panoramic views, and a vending machine that sells board shorts and bikinis.
Social Workout visited the hotel last Thursday evening to tour the gym, hit "Urban Yoga" taught by Dwight Garcia, (yogi, massage therapist, and onetime model for the Grey's Anatomy textbook, ahem), and otherwise to decompress in the biergarten gnawing on giant, $16 pretzels and watching ladies in Christian Louboutin heels swat ping pong balls. Body-centric West Villagers looking for catharsis on a summer Thursday should absolutely take note: The Standard will not replace your CrossFit or Jivamukti habits, but it's got the makings of quasi-healthy urban adventure, (and you can now skip the pool at the Soho House....)

I.AM.YOU Miami Weekend Escape
- Who: Lauren Imparato of I.AM.YOU Studio
- What: A weekend of yoga on the dock of the Standard Hotel in Miami, overlooking the water, with DJ-ed yoga on Saturday night.
- Why: Home of thongs, Jell-O shots, and stilettos, can Miami also be the home of thoughtful yoga? Banker-turned Yogi Lauren Imparato thinks so. The Standard is a notably chill spot a mile from the craziness of Miami Beach. If you're looking for silent macrobiotic meditation, maybe you should go to the Berkshires, but if you're looking for a sunny, healthy spring break for grown ups, you've found your retreat.
Standard NY!
So I'll be in NY in a few days, for a few days, and we're trying out The Standard. I hit them today regarding their gym or gym partnerships, and they told me there's a beautiful workout facility on the 17th floor with floor to cieling windows overlooking the Hudson.

Emergency Self Led Yoga at Home
As noted elsewhere, it was a long day. But I'm proud that I slipped out of the presentation on HTML emails, and knocked off 45 minutes of yoga in the living room before heading out again to MAP's birthday at the ridiculous-and-amazing boom boom room.

David Barton Astor Place Sexier than The Box and Cheaper
Last night, pre-martinis at Temple Bar with Lululemon (herself), we stopped in for overdue tour of the new David Barton Gym at Astor Place. Everone must go take a look, if only to see the next step in the evolution of gym to nightclub: DJ booth in the shape of giant mirrored ball, thumping music, outsized Phillipe Starck-style mirrors leaning against exposed steel and brick. Purple backlighting everywhere. Lovely juxtaposition of candle-lit wooden floors and futuristic cardio machinery (each unit with its own TV). All the energy does make you want to work out -- the way a hopping club makes you want to dance. Everyone beautiful in that lighting: The ripped man of color with dreds and tattoos; the Nicole Kidman knock-off doing pelvic lifts with pesonal trainer. And that's the further surprise: It's not all gay. The mix of men and women, in fact, roughly balanced. "David has a wife and a kid and lives on the Upper East Side," said our tour guide. "The Chelsea thing just sort of took off." My thought: It could easily have been Equinox Greenwich Avenue or any other Hot New Club, just re-themed, like a Windows desktop, to something between The Standard and the Delano. So, other than mandatory tourist visit, should you join?
