Pole Dreams

Guys, There's Finally A Pole Studio for You

Nestled in the back of The Fierce Club yoga studio on Elizabeth Street, Body & Pole features neon Buddha wall art, exposed brick, and glistening 14ft poles. Lian Tal, the founder of Body and Pole and a nationally recognized pole athlete, explains to me what makes her studio different. It's personalized and intimate, with classes limited to twelve people, plus "We offer a flexible schedule with no commitment, to women or men.” Yes gentlemen, now you can pole dance, too!

Retreats

High Voltage Yoga in Costa Rica

  • Who: Brian Williams, Director of the Fierce Club
  • What: "High Voltage Yoga Retreat," a week of yoga and Reiki in Costa Rica.
  • When: February 6 - 13, 2010
  • Where: Hotel Los Mangos, Montezuma, Costa Rica
  • Why: The Fierce Club brings a little rock and roll attitude to everything, so this retreat wont be overly reverent. You'll have total authorization to skip a yoga session and hang in your hammock if you feel like it. Brian is great with beginners but also brings enough edge to challenge advanced practitioners, so if you and a friend are at different levels, you can go together and both have a great time.
  • How Much: Varying packages. Single Occupancy: $1900; Double Occupancy: $1700 ($1750 after 1/15); Budget: $1250 (either a triple room or a single with a communal bathroom).  Special note: The Fierce Club is giving Social Workout readers (that's you!) $100 off double occupancy or budget packages. (SW doesn't get any kickback, so don't worry, our recommendation of this retreat is still impartial).

Remember Your First Time?

Virgin Vinyasa

Took the boyfriend to his very first yoga class on Saturday. Considered throwing him into some scary intense advanced class for kicks. Opted for what I thought would be a gentle initiation instead—Virgin Vinyasa at The Fierce Club—a weekly class for first time yogis.  Brian, our unassuming-just-a-regular-guy-looking instructor, talked us through every movement. We covered all the essentials — Downward Dog, Plank, Chaturanga, Warrior 1, Warrior 2, Chair Pose, Sun Salutations. I lost my yoga virginity to a video back in high school, so I thought I'd breeze through. Turns out I was wrong— Brian is an ass-kicking yoga master who set my shoulders and thighs on fire. I looked over, and the boyfriend had that barely-holding-it-together shaky muscle look. Momentarily, I worried this would be his first and last yoga class.  But no.  Post-class discussion revealed he too loved Brian. The fact that class was hard wasn't a turn off, it was a draw. He's going back for more this week.  Virgin Vinyasa — a total success.

May Edition Challenge Awards Press Conference

Thank you all for being here. Apologies again for getting this press conference started a little late. Last night, as many of you know, was the May Edition Challenge Awards Ceremony. Some people in our media affairs office are moving slowly this morning. Regardless, we're delighted to be here and to make the official online announcements of our Challenge winners. Please hold your applause until after all the names have been read.

One last word: Nearly 300 people signed up for this challenge. Our challengers churned out over 1,000 workouts in May. In the end, 30 challengers completed and blogged the requisite 26 workouts in the month. Hats off to all of our finishers, and to everyone who made a good run for it! You are all spectacular, and fully engaged in life. Your bodies appreciate you, as do we. Now then, without further ado, the prize winners of the 2009 Social Workout May Edition Challenge.....

Congratulations to one and all! We hope to see you all right back here in a matter of days for our epic Feats of Summer Challenge. Don't walk, run....

Day 9 - Trying to stay motivated today

I didn't fall asleep til 3am last night--just insomnia (probably from eating too much at my friend's seder). I'm soooo tired, and TRYING TRYING TRYING to keep my motivation up to go to a 1.5 hr ashtanga class tonight at 7:30 tonight. That's really late, people. But I will persevere.

Sexy Sadie

The Fierce Club Power Hour

I quadruple heart Sadie Nardini’s one-hour yoga class at The Fierce Club. Let’s start with the studio itself. The Fierce Club is undeniably cool – its street level Soho space has soaring ceilings, a loft-style polished cement floor, and a stunning wall mural that’s half cubist, half street graffiti, and totally awesome. The mantra, “The Guru is the Self,” runs across the top. What’s not to dig? And then there’s Sadie....
