The Hollywood ChiaPet Diet
One of my favorite L.A. friends is a comedian/actress. She jokes a lot about being a little anorexic—someone just gave her a gift certificate to the pricey Wolfgang Puck restaurant Cut, and she only ordered the side dishes. She works out like a maniac at Equinox, and is an early adapter to diet fads. "She's eating Chia Pets now," her boyfriend told me over a recent dinner, consisting mainly of salad.

Hangover Hike
Paseo Miramar in the Pacific Palisades is one of LA's most popular weekend hikes for young couples and fit singles. This means there are a lot of hungover, attractive people on the trail, and most everyone I know runs into someone they know there.

Tennis Anyone?
You don't need to join a country club to get a truly elitisit, elegant tennis experience in L.A. Just book a lesson at the storied Beverly Hills Hotel (aka the Pink Palace), where you always feel like a celeb, and usually spot at least one. At $35 for 30 min, or $75 for an hour, you get a great lesson and old school flourishes, like the orange slices in the icebox. After, go for drinks at the Polo Lounge or brunch by the gorgeous pool—jump in too, while you're at it. (It's a good one for laps). We'll let you in on one of L.A.'s open secrets: You can swim at almost any hotel pool, any time you want....

The flagship YAS (Yoga and Spinning, pronounced YAZ) location in Venice has been such a hit, that a new one just opened up in Silver Lake.

Stretch for the Stars
Griffith Park is one of LA's great outdoor exercise treasures. You've got tennis, golf, soccer, swimming, and trails for hiking, jogging and horseback riding. It's cheap, gorgeous, and easy. Even better, there's coffee and cake at the top, served at the stunning, newly renovated observatory. Rest your legs (or your horse) and catch some shade at the planetarium show. The narrators of these shows tend to be aspiring reality TV show hosts, and they bring significant enthusiasm to their delivery. This makes for a way above average family outing, or a great date night: Hike, show, and then dinner in Los Feliz or Silverlake.

Coffee and Cake at the Top
My Swiss grandmother would never hike anywhere without the guarantee of coffee and cake at the top, and I think she was on to something. My take on her hiking philosophy can be found in Topanga, a good place to head this holiday weekend. Here's the routine...
