Hula Not Hulu

Hula Hooping

Hula is big, of course. They're doing it in Atlanta, and they're doing it on their Wii Fits (while being secretly filmed). And they've been doing it in New York City for ages. Spotted this lovely shot courtesy of juggling impresario Brian Dube, who runs New York Daily Photo...

Meet Viktoria Shvartsman, professional contortionist, acrobat, aerialist, hand balancer, juggler and hooper. When I asked prior to the shoot, just as a formality, if she was afraid of heights, she laughed and said "absolutely not." Viktoria is the fifth generation of a circus performing family that dates back to 1912 in Russia. Her older sister Gena and younger sister Maria also are performers, as well as her father and mother.

Feeling springy and hula-ready? GrooveHoops has a long-running class at the 14th Street Y on Monday nights at 8 P.M. $12 at the door, and they provide the hoops. If you want to go for the double feature, show up at 7 P.M. for Punk Rope. Also, check out the more traditional Hula New York classes at Nola Studios in midtown, though these are seasonal.
