It Wasn't Me, It Was My Friends
This week's Featured Body, michlny, on the wonder of friends who share your fitness interests.
When I get together with friends, I always try to fit it around fitness/activity. So, it needs to be after the gym or it needs to include a workout or a walk, bike, hike, etc. If we're going to eat, it needs to be someplace with healthy options.

But He Was So Healthy....
In which this week's Featured Body, michlny, reflects on the complexities of health.
The final straw. An office tragedy. A co-worker, recently passed because of cancer. The response of many was similar to responses and comments I always get when I stress the important of eating healthy and exercise.

So excited!!
In which this week's Featured Body, mindyse, anticipates a great session with one of the best coaches she has ever met.
I am so excited for this, I can hardly wait for 5:30 to arrive. I started rowing in 1995, just dinking around, nothing serious. When I was in PT school, I decided to join Marquette University's Rowing Club. They had a new coach that year, a recent grad from the University of Wisconsin - Madison and he really knew what he was doing. We were fast, really fast and even though we were a small club, we were pretty competitive with varsity level colleges.

ACTION-REFLECTION-TRANSFORMATION
First off, an apology for drinking two glasses of wine and not really eating dinner and then channeling the wine to whine on the interent last night. Thanks for all the cyber support- you guys are better than an enell bra!
My big bro has been in some down places in his life and I have been his primary cheerleader for about fifteen years now. I thought back to something I said to him when I was a wise age of 14 years old. I said:

Listening to Your Body
In which this week's Featured Body, syrupandhoney, explores intuitive eating.
While some factors are out of our control, we make decisions every day that dictate our physical health, including how and how much we move, rest, and fuel our bodies. Although it's called Social Workout, it's no surprise that wellness topics such as sleeping and healthy eating frequently arise in this community. If I'm not eating well or I am sleep-deprived, my workout will likely suffer (or not happen at all...). In that spirit, I would like to get the thoughts of you Social Workout denizens regarding a topic of interest to me: intuitive eating.

want dessert so good it'll make you cry?
In which this week's "Featured Body," msh258, eats really, really well.
This post is now a bit overdue -- but it must be done! I had another absolutely amazing meal thanks to killercadoogan. We went to BLT Prime and making use of his special Crunch magic (uhm...or the fact that the manager of BLT Prime is a Crunch member), we got reservations to the super-special anniversary celebration they were having (at absurdly low prices, I might add). Believe me when I say: I love me some steak. I mean, lately I've gotten into the pattern of starting my days with steak and a smoothie (OMG...can I just say again: I LOVE being paleo). But, especially after the unbelievable meal we had at BLT Market, I knew that this would be an amazing treat. Oh boy was I right!

our journey.
Today, our "Featured Body," msh258, talks honestly (and in our humble opinion, quite beautifully) about eating, accepting positivity, and learning to love your body.
I have made some poor choices when it comes to my health, well...rather when it comes to weight loss. The whole “issue” of weight became an “issue” sometime in early middle school via the usual mechanisms for those types of things – the nasty remarks and teasing of classmates. Well, I don’t need to go into details about any of that…many of us remember occasions of this sort. The first clear time that I remember making an active decision to want to lose weight was in 9th grade – probably precipitated by my family’s move to the U.S. from Switzerland and the accompanying worries of finding acceptance in yet another school, another city, another home.

why a big mac is cheaper than a salad.
In which this weeks' "Featured Body," msh258, explores the troubling world of food subsidies and the obesity epidemic.
The graph below shows the U.S. federal subsidies for food production over a decade ending in 2005. Clearly, there is a HUGE contrast between what the U.S. government recommends and what they actually encourage via the subsidies. According to the Federal Nutrition Recommendations, meat and dairy should comprise approximately 25% of our intake. So why do these industries receive a full 75% of subsidies? On the other hand, we see that fruit and veg only get 0.37% of subsidies! The lower the subsidies, the higher the pricing as it costs more for the industry to produce. So, if fruits and veggies are expensive to produce (and therefore buy) is it any wonder the country has an obesity problem?

on eating plastic.
In which this week's "Featured Body," msh258, takes a close look at some pretty un-wild food.
A few weeks ago, I was in a supermarket by my job and as I'm wandering the aisles, I come across this madness: fat-free, sugar-free, calorie-free, cholesterol-free, carbohydrate-free, and gluten-free...chocolate dip?! Seriously people, what IS this stuff? Turns out it's something along the lines of plastic...here are the ingredients:

you better realize you're hot...like...now.
In which this week's "Featured Body," msh258, gets a dose of wisdom from her hottie of a mother.
Sundays are usually my days to catch up on the 'real life' activities that I inevitably neglected throughout the week. So, yesterday I did all the laundry, cleaning, cooking, etc. that needed to be done and then I popped by my mom's place for coffee and a chat. I love those! Anyways, at some point she showed me some pictures that my older brother came across recently of her in her late 20's, just a couple years older than me now. She was a total hottie!!! When I said so, she just responded with a 'yea! I just wish I knew that then!'
