Pear Shapes More Likely To Suffer Memory Loss

Most studies about body fat storage harangue belly fat. Fat around the middle puts you at higher risk for diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, brain shrinkage, and a host of other troubles. For those of us who store fat on our hips, other than the annoyance of perpetually being described as pears, seems like we're getting off pretty easy. There are even studies pointing to hip fat having anti-inflammatory benefits that help keep your arteries clear. Alas, a new study on memory is dampening the hip fat party a little bit.

Researchers looked at close to 9,000 women ages 65 to 79, and for every one-point increase in a woman's BMI, her score on a 100-point memory test dropped a point. Bad news all around, but for women who stored fat around their hips, the effects were even worse. Scientists don't have an exact explanation for why, though they think it has something to do with the type of hormones released by hip fat.

Speaking as a pear, I don't know where this hip-fat party is.  I can see three of my ribs, but I still have saddlebags.  Finding a dress is impossible.  And now poor memory?  Bah!

Is this why I can't remember anything?
