Ruminations on Running Class

- Running Class
I run, but I am not a runner. But I really want to be a runner. I want to wear those tiny shorts and glide around the park like a gazelle, feeling that elusive runners high I’ve heard so much about. And so I've signed myself up for running classes, which seemed like a good start. New York Road Runners offers running classes on Tuesday and Thursday nights, and I’m sure there are similar classes like this all over the place. But now that I've paid my $100 for 10 weeks of committed running times, I’m wondering whether it was really worth it. Here’s the lowdown...
In the beginners class, which is what I signed up for, you show up, you do some super easy stretching, then walk to a park and run in timed increments, which are designed to get you running longer or faster depending on your session. Sounds good, except, there’s really no coaching. Basically you huddle up and run/run-walk for approximately 20 minutes. Which to my cardio addicted self is pretty much a warm-up. You “can” run ahead of the group if you’re a speed demon, but for the most part your pace is dictated by your pack, and the instructor is there mainly to tell you when to walk and when to run.
The good news is that if a class is too easy or hard for you, you can just switch into another group with no questions asked, so I may attempt to move up from beginner next week. The bad news is, if you’re looking for someone to dissect your stride, teach you how to effectively glide up hills, or the best breathing techniques, you probably won’t get it here.
I have a friend who signed up for the advanced class and just asked for his money back. I’ll stick with the program, though, because I like structure and group activities, but honestly “running class” is basically just a bunch of people running together and paying for the privilege.
If that doesn't sound like your thing but you'd still like a helping hand, here's another option: Online coaching. Check out Coach Shelley for running schedules and advice. Bam, $100 saved! You can thank me later.

So many other places offer that for free - i.e, Nike, and Jack Rabbit....

I couldn't get my ass out of bed in time to make it to the 5:45 a.m. classes, but the EZ8 program seems really great. Lots of intervals, sprints, stairs, hills. The people I talked to said it improved their race times significantly. And you don't have to stay with the group. You do as many of whatever the circuit/activity is as you are able in the hour.

Yeah, you can either get this for free with Nike, Crossfit Endurance, or Lululemon, or very cheaply by joining one of the nonprofit NYC running clubs -- the Flyers, Harriers or the Reservoir Dogs, for example.
